Difference between Oktava Mk012 and Mk012a?

Is the only difference that the MK012a is bundled only with the hyper cardoid cap?

the mk012a is bundled with 1 capsule (you must specify hypercardioid). The mk012 has all 3 capsules.

Since you are getting an oktava, you know you need the k-tek kssm shockmount with soft bands and the rycote Baby Ball Gag (20mm) or it will be rather unusable right?

Thanks mate, I only have a rycote pistol grip (that wouldn't work would it {it doesn't have the soft bands}). I was planning on getting the SM-3 shockmount as I heard it is possible to camera mount if I have to. Here's the sound stuff I have so far, would any of it be useable for the mk012? Namely using the windsock on it instead of the baby ball?

Yes, I know pretty much nothing about sound so explain to me as you would a child. Thanks a lot.

I know you can get an adapter that will let any shock mount sit in the camera hot shoe. something like this but with the correct thread

I think you are stuck getting new stuff for your okatava and if I were me (or you) i would just buy the right thing the first time and be done with it. I have read for days and days on this forum and these are inescapable conclusions sorry to say.

You need to mic people really close, so close you would swear it is in the shot (12"-18" away) with the Oktava to get that great sound, so camera mounting is not really an option.

The kit you picked out seems like a good start and would work well outside. Now you just need your indoors (and perhaps a mixer). Save up and get a good mixer when you do (either the sound devices 302 or SD mixpre) it is spendy but worth it in more ways then I can explain here.

BTW I didn't reccomend anything that I didn't buy myself (and try to find a way out of buying).

Would it be ok if I explain it as if you were a 6 foot biped reptile with martial arts skills? ;)

But seriously, what Mike said, and the softie will almost definately not work with the Oktava.

Remember, the Oktava is not an outdoor mic. With the right protection it CAN be used outdoors but it is not a good choice. Even something like the cheapo Rode will be better suited to outdoor shots.

Cheers

Thanks people.

Yeah I have a Sony ECM374 (? i think) for a shotgun.

I was about to buy the oktava and hopefully soon will for indoors but I couldn't believe how much the baby ball costs for what it is. Anyone have other suggestions for a baby ball that is still a good quality or is that one the best $/quality option?

Are people happy with the SM-3?

that is what you need unless you want to hear wooshing when the boom op swings the boom at all. It is also EXTREMELY sensitive to vibration that is why you NEED the good shockmount.

There are tons of other posts on the subjects, do a search (I just thought I could save you the trouble).

You get a great mic for a great price, but it has it's cost somewhere else. The nice thing is that all of the gear you get for that mic should work when you move up to the AKG blueline (w/ CK93), ultra linear (w/CK63) or a schoeps.

Really it seems expensive, but everyone says that, many people end up trying something different, most end up with the right thing eventually.

Mike thanks for all your help. I really know I shouldn't try to cut cost on sound but I've already spent a small fortune on a HVX. Think I'll go ahead with your suggestions, still seems by far the best setup for the bucks.

I use my oktava with a rycote pistol grip/shock mount system and it works fine. you do need to be careful with your technique in terms of not knocking the pole, but it works fine.

You do need the 19mm (small) hole size, and if you're using the BBG the oktava is quite short, but it works fine. You can also always get a barrel extender to lengthen the mic a bit.

Thanks timapter that's great news! Also timapter; do you find you frequently use the BBG? I'll get the mic and give it a try.

So if audio is 70% of your film, you can count yourself luck getting away with spending less than that as a percentage. How much was the HVX?

Yeah, I know... I was definately going to get the oktava but the BBG price was a curveball I didn't need.

I had planned to find a sound guy in my relatively small town (I don't have a mixer! I can see the next few posts now ;) ) but that may be a pipedream so I would like to have a decent audio setup.

Thanks for all the help, any other suggestions are appreciated.
