Difference between "normal" and "tele" for mics

So i'm thinking about buying this shotgun mic and before I buy it I would like to know the difference in the patterns of normal and tele. All you audio people that know more about this than I do, can you help explain?

yes , you are going to buy one of the worst product s, which contain 2 capsules with small internal matrix ,which in tele you get more from the forward one and in normal probably the omni pattern
keep your 50$ for something better

There is really no such thing as a "tele" mic even though some manufacturer's marketing departments like to pretend there is in their consumer lines. I've never heard of any professional-grade mics bearing such nonsense labels. You didn't say what mic you're looking at so it's hard to know exactly what they're really doing but as Oleg said it's likely that in the 'normal' position it has a wider pattern and a narrower one in the 'tele' setting with the reduced peripheral noise pickup letting you turn up the recording gain a little. The misleading thing is the names give the impression that it is somehow magically magnifying the sound and bringing it closer the way a tele lens magnifys an image and makes it appear closer but the natural laws of acoustic physics simply don't permit sound to behave the way light does. It might be a decent enough consumer mic but such advertising claims should set off alarm bells and make you think twice about putting down your hard-earned coins IMHO.

Yep, the switch selects between two pickup patterns, a cardioid one that is most sensitive to sounds roughly within a hemisphere in front of the mic - think of a balloon with the mic pushed into one side until the front of the mic is in the centre of the balloon - and a supercardioid, sort of like a wide flashlight beam fanning out in front of the mic. I wouldn't bother with the boompole on that offer - I can't believe it'll be anything but flimsy c**p, save $20 and order the mic from B&H. Depending on your camcorder it might be better than the stock in -camera mic - A/T is a good manufacturer - but don't expect miracles.

exactly what i was thinking about , piece of **** under at- name
so these under jvc and ochers , 99 bucks - they robe you
not worth even 20
