Difference b/w rendering in Vegas and FCP

I've been messing around with Vegas for a couple of days now, especially with Magic Bullet settings and what not. Coming from FCP, one thing I haven't quite grasped is the difference in rendering b/w the two programs. By this I mean that, in FCP, whenever you add a transition or effect that required rendering, you rendered it, then your footage in your timeline possessed that effect. In Vegas, though, when I add an effect like Magic Bullet and the footage in the preview window gets jerky, I figured I had to render the effect. Here's where I'm still a little lost -- if I choose "render as," I get a whole new .avi file but when my footage from the timeline plays in the preview window, it's still jerky. Am I missing something?

Thanks for all your help so far, especially to David Jimerson, who's been extremely helpful. Hopefully within the next couple of days, I'll have learned all the differences b/w the two programs and finally feel comfortable with Vegas.

Use "selectively prerender video" from the Tools drop-down. You'll want to select the area to prerender first, of course.

As long you don't move anything or change anything, it will stay prerendered.

I understand the confusion. I moved from FCP to Vegas, and it's still something that irks me to this day, but I've learned to live with it.

Personally, I think Vegas should adopt background rendering.
