I heard of many cameras and or Computer Fire Wire ports
being burned and not covered by warranties.

Any experience or advise on how to avoid the problem ?

Fire wire is supose to be Hot Swop, Is it ?

Firewire is designed to be hot-swappable. I've swapped items all the time with it, with no issues...

I have read in few forums about the "Fried Ports" issue.

It is a mystery, why do they fry?

Recently I saw a letter from a camera dealer saying
that the Fire Wire Ports are not covered by the warranty unless you connect and disconnect with both computer and camera turned off and disconnected from the mains power.

I am familiar with 220 v countries and there is an issue. I wonder if 110 v countries are safer.

Although it is supposed to be hot-swappable, there have been some issues specifically with Mac users and the DVX. Although I'm not a Mac user, a service guy told me it has something to do with a ground differential or some such electronic term. Takes out a chip on the DVX main board. The advice is to connect with everything off and then power-up.

I have heard the opposite...to make sure the camera is ON before you plug in the FW. I keep one end of the FW plugged into the G5 all the time and just plug it into the camera when I need to import.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

I think that this is the worth way.

When you have both devices connected and ON, The possibility of a high voltage ground equalizing spark to "jump"
to one of the data contacts is the highest.

I have an instruction note from a Sony authorized lab. saying
that the safest way is to make the connection ONLY when the camera is DISCONNECTED from the mains, And to make
sure there is no monitor conacted to the camera either !

Now go figure it out :-[ :-[ ??? :-/ :-/ !

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

Sounds like yet another good reason to use a cheapie camera or deck as a capture device.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

How many times would folks say they have plugged and unplugged the firewire cable from their camera? I'm wondering if after a lot of this, the connectors can get worn out. I know that depending on the quality of the plating of the contacts on the connectors, this could be a problem. I've been getting flacky results during capture and I think it's my firewire cable. I've plugged and unpluged maybe 30 times.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

I broke a pin on my DVX, cost $150 to fix. I didn't even try to warranty it, as it was completely my fault.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

$150 for the repair doesn't sound too bad. Was this to replace the firewire connector on the camera? At an authorized repair shop? Which one? I'm afraid that at some point, I'm going to have to do this.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

yeah its a $10 part, its just the pin. I didnt fry the board, that your looking at least $500 for the repair, if not more.

Re: Did you ever burned your Fire Wire ports ?

Jarred,

do you happen to have the part number for the firewire connector that you needed to replace? I called to a couple of Panasonic authorized repair centers here in So Cal, and one says he's never done it before and the other said labor is $150 and the part costs "less than $100" but he won't give me the exact price.

thanks
