Did anybody watch South Park last night?

I really like South Park 90% of the time... and I'm appalled by it 10% of the time... While I laughed my ass off last night... sometimes I gotta' ask myself if they made a deal with the devil or what? (before you answer this rhetorical question, yeah, I know... they're smart)

How in the hell do they get away with some of that stuff?

I can't think of anybody else who so completely rails... SO EFFECTIVELY... against EVERYTHING... and just continuously stays above the hollywood (media? pop culture? middle america? religion?) machine. Yes, "stays above" is just a way of putting it... call it below or whatever... clearly they aren't playing the game... whatsoever... it's like a guy with f-u tattooed on his forehead who's wildly successful. They've figured out how to perfectly wrap the most controversial topics in a complete story... in a way that also frees them to be so outrageous with the content that it leaves me in awe.

Did anybody else watch last night thinking "Oh... My... God..."... :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

if things are done in parody then they have more protected rights.

btw i love south park, been watching since it started and i think after season 6 they have only been getting better, BECUASE it's become more topical. i love the show and they tend to have some good ideas.

they are really smart. and quick-witted .

but yes i was like What!!! last night haha

...of course you can also get away with saying a great deal that is distinctly un-funny, while still enjoying the freedom that comes from calling it 'comedy...' although of course audience response is subjective...

Not really very much of anything beside mulling over the fact that wealthy, powerful men are more likely to cheat on their wives.

What was the episode about?

The episode was about an FBI agent that points out the ridiculously obvious... and therefore gets killed so that the rest of the world can keep their head in the sand.

And I guess comedy is subjective... because while it wasn't one of the funniest SP episodes... it was up there with the Time Immigrants episode for kicking you in the nuts... comedically speaking of course. :nads:

I think it was a more subtle commentary about the whole Tiger thing (the internal, unspoken perception of it)... kind of like the "hot teacher" episode with Ike... same undertone.

that is because comedians hold the greatest trump card known to man: "it was just a joke."

a close second among trump cards would probably be, "i'm sorry officers, i didn't know she was underage." alright so that one isn't really much of a trump card now that i think about it. maybe like..i dunno.. a 3 of diamonds at best..

[callback] but don't blame me, it was just a joke. [/callback]

Well, South Park *is* well-known for their subtlety...

Sorry Matt, but I wouldn't call the Tiger aspect of the episode "subtle"... the boys are playing Tiger's new PGA Tour video game and the whole time the second player controls his wife who's beating the crap out of him for cheating. And this is featured at least 4 times in the episode. Not subtle...
But I did find the episode pretty funny. As with all of their stuff, if you're offended, you take yourself too seriously. In reality, if you've been on Southpark, whether in a positive or negative light, it's really a sign that you've 'arrived'... kind of what Weird Al was (is) for music... it's kind of a stamp of approval even if they're totally ripping on you.

For my part I didn't find it offensive, just mostly un-funny. Nowhere near the best they've done, is all. Not even really anywhere near the middle of the pile, either.

Sorry... what I meant was that it was blatantly calling bullsh*t to everybody who's acting shocked about the events surrounding Tiger... which is to say virtually everybody.

South Park is NEVER subtle... that was a bad choice of words.

I meant the quick eye flicks towards any women present... as well as the guy pounding his fist in outrage... but his fist is barely thumping the table... indicating a complete disbelief in what he's saying. (I never meant to say the TIGER thing was subtle... but the actions and undertones from everybody else... leading up to the FBI guy... who finally speaks up.)

I didn't find the episode as funny as many other episodes are... but I like how much they pounded the anti-b.s. point home... as they often times do. South Park has been holding the country's mouth closed until it swallows the red pill for about 10 years now... and I agree it's only getting more sophisticated (with the exception of some "raunch" I'd rather not see in it).

Well, I think that's why South Park's got such a niche that even Family Guy can't touch... it's extremely intelligent yet completely disgusting. We're talking about a construction-paper cut-out cartoon show who's movie was nominated for an oscar (an won 6 other awards) for a song about blaming Canada for everything... They call us out on our BS and societal garbage, yet still make dirty jokes and remind us that we still have a child inside who laughs at some of the raunchier things in life. Even their most unfunny episode still makes me laugh. I don't know of another show that can say that.

I saw it and loved it. Sure, it wasn't close to the "World of Warcraft" episode. But how many can be?

Thing is, and I think I've said this before, up until a couple years ago I completely forgot that South Park was even on the air. They were this huge late 90's phenomenon, had a movie, were the rage, then I tuned out. There's only so much hilarity I could glean from Christmas poo. But a few years ago, I was like, "what ever happened to that show? Is it even still on?" After a little research I was AMAZED that not only was is still on the air but it was very relevant and more hilarious than ever. I was like wtf? Usually shows like that lose steam and they seem to be gaining it. Their social commentary is the best.
Whenever I watch South Park, especially on an urging, I'm usually blown away by how hilarious it is.

I loved the Tiger Woods video game. And the scene with the monkeys had me rolling...especially since I cannot stand the drama behind the whole Tiger deal. The press demanding an apology. People calling him a pig. PGA tour members saying, "I'm really disappointed in him." blah blah blah. No one is stating the obvious. Good looking, talented, young BILLIONAIRE is hitting tail that isn't his wife and you are surprised?!?!?! Get real.

Totally agreed.

The fact that anybody is demanding an apology from him is completely ridiculous. It doesn't affect his golf, his endorsements, or anything else he does... and he didn't break a law. I'm not saying it was right, but he's not an elected official or really anything to the public but a golfer... and to women, he's an attractive, rich, successful, talented man... Anyone who's calling him out is just angry that they don't have the same opportunities to do the same thing as him.

And the monkey scene in south park was HILARIOUS. As was the way Kenny died...

Really, it suggests how thoroughly screwed up we are as a society, that we even care (and that those of us who don't are obliged to endlessly hear about it).

Trey & Matt (and the rest of the South Park team) are awesome. They have attained the level of Dr. House. They're too good to be reined in. It doesn't matter how far they cross the line, they'll still have a job.
