Dialogue Tips

does anyone have tips for cleaning up dialouge in post? I alway get that hissy background gain and I try to use frequency cutoffs, but it always ends up sounding bad. Any tips? (sorry if this should be in a different thread)

I usually use the noise reduction filter in Audition. You can't apply it too stronly (i.e. more than 50%), because then the voices start sounding tinny. Another solution is to hide the noise with some music or other ambient noises.

Then you tell yourself that you've got to get a better recording next time.

I keep trying to get good wt frequencey cut-off, it will take out the background gain noise, but it makes the persons voise sound fake and noticeably tampered with, as if I added a crappy sound effect.

Waves makes a great plugin called "R Vox".

I used the preset called "HissyLectureIntelligizer" the other day for some background hiss and noise (tv and fan were on in the background). The results were amazing.

I have Sound Soap, and it's ok. I use it with Digi's DINR. It's not great, but it's better than nothing. There are lots of different ones out there, and they all work a little differently, so I recommend you have a couple different ones, if you can. The sucky thing is none of them are really cheap, so be prepared to spend some cash.

dave_fisk, I tried sound soap on a friends mac and although I didnt have time to go in depth with it, there were much better plugins that come with FCP. And money, well, that is my dillema, cant really afford anything fancy, so I figured DVXuser hasent failed me yet.

Waves.com has demos of all their products.

I have the "Platinum Bundle".

They are pretty expensive, though...but great.

I have the cheap sound soap, and I have to say, for males with deep voices, it's pretty much no good. It worked better for females, but even then, it's not the best, but it also doesn't break the bank. I have the waves gold bundle, and it's noise reduction plug-in really didn't help me at all, but maybe I didn't spend enough time with it. I have DINR, and that also works OK. I used Sound Soap with DINR, and then it was usable, but not on everything.

The best thing to do is to make sure you get the best sound you possibly can, but even then, sometimes there are circumstances on production where you can be limited in what you record.

Cedar noise reduction stuff is the best, but it costs as much as a small, cheap car, so....

Any FFT-based noise reduction plugin will do wonders. Just select a second or so of the noise you want to remove, then apply it to the entire file -- and it will remove ONLY the noise.

You'll want to keep a little bit of the noise unless you want your dialogue to sound like Aphex Twin was your sound-guy. :)

It takes a bit of tweaking to figure out the right settings, but once you know how to use it there'll be almost nothing you can't clean.
