Dialogue mixing

Anyone with experience in dialogue mixing?

I have a project with about nine interviews. Each person has there own dynamics to deal with. some with deeper voices that cause a louder apparent level.

I am using some compression on the individual tracks of each talent to level out any
noticable volume changes. just to smooth it out a bit.

I have been listening to the mix and making level changes between the different interviewers so that they all sound consistant in levels.

This is a good size project and this method takes alot of time to do. I'm pretty close but not as close as I'd like to be level wise.

Are there any other ways to achieve a consistant level between talents?
Looking at peak level meters dosen't help much. a average level meter would be much better but....

Any ideas what else would work in this situation?

Use volume automation to ride the levels. Compression only works when your level meets or exceeds the threshold. This will make setting the threshold easier.

I'm assuming you are using Soundtrack or ProTools or similar software with the ability to do volume automation.

Thanks. thats what I have been doing so I guess I'll keep moving along.
I'm on the last sequence of the project and I have a new respect for dialogue mixers.
It's quite a process.

Thanks again for you help.
