Dexter

I agree -- this show definitely merits an all-day video-on-demand marathon. Michael C. Hall has just nailed this guy. He had a great line in an interview he did when he was on Six Feet Under -- the interviewer asked him if he was gay in "real life," and he said, "Funny, no one ever asks me if I'm a funeral director in real life." I always think of that when I watch Dexter -- the possibility of some dumb-a** interviewer asking him, "So, are you a serial killer in real life?"
I believe he (recently) secretly married is co-star in real life (the girl who plays his sister).

I watched every season of this show except for this season. Seems like I have a lot of catching up to do.

There is another thread floating around here somewhere about how the show looks crappy in HD (makeup, lighting, etc)...I see some flaws after they've been pointed out, but overall I'm a big fan of this show.
If I remember correctly they were talking about the highlights being blown out all over the place. But I think it works.... Cold... Moody.

Latin, did you see the interview with Dexter & John Lithgow following the show? They elaborated on that final scene, it was very cool.

What?! Well now I will certainly catch it on re-run!! Thanks. I watched the feature on the beginnings of Dexter, the animated episodes at Sho.com but not that one. Thanks for the heads up!!

[SPOILER]
Yea, I saw some comments on how much people hate blown highlights on an other thread. My take on that is that this show is supposed to be jarring, not pretty. What's so great about it IMO is that we like Dexter, we trust him, then his dark passenger ruins it all. The cliffhanger is a perfect example. I was so happy to see Rita and Dexter getting along, like when he punched that douche next door I was like YEAH!!! hehe... that and everything else between them on this show, even Angel and Maria's wedding, it was all a big setup for that upsetting love twist. Poor kids. HBO and Showtime, that is the best medium, period... "subscription channels" rock. [SPOILER]

[SPOILER ALERT]

What do I think of it? It was freaking crazy, that's what I think. I thought the episode was done/resolved and then I was like, "wait a minute....they have to have some kind of cliffhanger to take us into next season". I mean, that ending was DARK. No joke, I had a dream about a serial killer last night. :Drogar-Kriz(DBG)::Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

I'm a dork, so I'm going to elaborate on this a bit...SPOILERS>>>

I liked Rita's character...she made Dexter more everyday could-be-your-neighbor-type...and I liked that. Plus, she's nice to look at. So, yeah, I'm gonna miss her being on the show. I don't mind that she is gone now (more on that later), but I DO not agree with the way that she was killed off.

I'm not a writer, but this finale seemed to break too many rules. I mean, there was NO set up at all that anything like this could happen! The whole idea behind suspense is setting up what's going to happen, get the viewers all worked up, and then showing step-by-step how it's going to happen. I don't mind bending the rules for a little creative spin, but this finale completely ignored the rules, leaving me feel cheated. Hard to explain...

It's like the infamous rewinding scene in Funny Games...you just can't do that! Don't play games with the audience!

Having said all of that, I look forward to the next season more than any other. With Dexter's wife murdered, Dexter has some more room to be the vigilante that he needs to be, but there will still be a dramatic balancing act between work, "work," and the kids. Will the grandparents keep Astor and Cody? Will Dex and Harrison be on their own? Will Dex meet someone new? There are a lot of exciting directions this can go, now.

So, I'm kinda PO'd at the producers for what they did with the finale, but word has it that a group of the producing team got das boot and they are bringing on some staff from '24.' Gonna be a long 9 months...

[SPOILERS] The setup was there. Dexter's life was going back to a balance, he was better than Trinity, he realized he had real feelings for Rita and was not the type of monster he finally got to dispose of after so much trouble. So things were looking up, until he finds Rita, and his life "twists" back to how it really should be, a mess... he is still a serial killer. That's how I saw it. However, the timing was so abrupt, and Rita has been with us for so long, she was so committed to Dexter... perhaps that is why it feels so rough. I betcha that if they had a bit more show they might have considered easing us into it a bit as Dexter walks in or in some other way. Perhaps they could have used a bit more of the rest of the show for this... I dunno... in the end they won... I keep saying to myself "Ritaaa.... why?" Those bastards! I am SO tuning in next season. He he he... [/SPOILERS]

PLAY GAMES! That is the best! They like to figure things out and the are smarter than all of us. :)

[SPOILERS] I am most excited to have Deb finally figure out Dex and find out about Harry's code! She is set up as a mega detective now, a relentless workaholic, there is no way in hell that she will ignore the Ice Truck killer link for much longer, she sees hi differently now, even if just a little. I want her to turn into a new Harry... but that probably won't happen, cause she is our heroine, she can't be tainted by the dark passenger. I dunno man... I just love this show. [/SPOILERS]

I'm gonna have to disagree here. About five episodes ago I guessed this might happen... actually, to be more clear, after I watched one of the earlier episodes in this season I said to a friend, "They're going to have to keep Trinity around till the season finale. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up killing Dexter's entire family somehow". That was 100% a guess I pulled out of what seemed to be nowhere, but that's why I love this show... you don't know what's coming.

This season focused a lot on "family life and relationships", how Dexter seemed torn between the two worlds, how he was unsure what to do... should he leave them now to save them in the end? etc, etc. That right there IS the buildup. We knew something was going on with his family... It was the seasons main focus, whether it be his or Trinity's or office relationships or, etc. It's only suiting for this show to end it the way they did. The entire season was the setup to his family dissipating. The marriage at the office, the death of Deb's love, Deb's partner and what's her face (Trinity's daughter)... all of these are clues to build upon the whole "family" thing, if you ask me. The most shocking thing they could do after all this family talk, is murder Dexter's family.

I, for one, am glad Rita's gone. I like the darker side of the show, not the neighbor next door stuff. And Rita constantly seemed to nag at Dexter, and in turn annoy me (which is what I believe the writers were after, thus a bit more of a setup to her leaving the show).

Anyway you look at it, this is one of the best shows, hands down, I've ever seen on television. (Another great being "Lost")

You know, Rita got herself killed. If she hadn't called Dexter when he was in that high speed chase, Dexter wouldn't have taken the call, gotten distracted and hit that guy's car. Then he could have killed Trinity in the van once and for all. Or I guess Dexter got his wife killed by taking the call. Either way. :undecided

I'm also going to have to disagree with Mike. I think a setup was implied.....Trinity is a serial killer, there was always the chance he could find Dexter's true identity.

But I am scratching my head at the timeline....at what point in the day did he kill her?

[SPOILERS] Ryan, you are right. The whole season was about the family, how it held him back, how he exposed them to danger, etc... poor f'in Rita, she had such luck with men. haha.. I can't help it, this really sucks major you know what. Still, I agree, Dexter's passenger will be better off now. I guess Deb will come in to help, doubt the grandparents will become a major role. The kids wouldn't want to leave Dexter, though he might face that bridge at the beginning of next season.

I am telling you, it was someone in Trinity's family that did it... Trinity would clean up the floor. [/SPOILERS]

I want to buy a Dexter t-shirt. :)

I am telling you, it was someone in Trinity's family that did it... Trinity would clean up the floor.

Unless the writers are really screwing with the audience, it's been made very clear that it was Trinity. Check the web, there are interviews with actors & producers proclaiming that fact. And John Lithgow even did a live webcast thingy the other day where he outlined how his character went to Dexter's sister's apartment first and then killed Rita. (probably in a fit of rage, remember how mad he was when he found the wrong residence) The real question I have is did Trinity reveal to Rita that Dexter was trying to kill him before he killed her?

(Oh brother, I thought my wife was the fan, how the hell did I get sucked into this show?):grin:

Yea, but why would Trinity not even mention it... I know he had surrendered himself to his fate, but still. I dunno... the obvious answer is that it was him, I just don't know what to believe with this show. :)

I really gotta catch those interviews.

Yea, but why would Trinity not even mention it...

Trinity was almost always extremely patient and cautious. If he was ready to die, why interfere with Dexter's plans for him? Furthermore, I don't believe killing Rita was an act of vengeance. He had been searching for Dexter; Rita happened to be there and we all know how driven Trinity was to satisfy his urges. If Trinity did derive some satisfaction from offing Dexter's wife, he was refined enough to quietly keep the knowledge to himself, knowing what awaited Dexter's arrival home.

I do see him as someone that would keep quiet, but killing Rita in the bathtub makes no sense, and leaving a mess on the floor makes no sense either. Sure Dexter was found like that when his mother was killed, but how would Trinity know that? It took Deb this long to find that out. So maybe he was angry when he found Rita, killed her, decided to do it like he did to so many, decided to leave the baby crying in a puddle of blood... then keep quiet... sure... it just doesn't make as much sense as I wish it did. I am obviously thinking about it too much. Either way, this is still by far my favorite show. It isn't an easy theme to pull off and they are doing a fantastic job.

No doubt that Trinity did it. And I don't think there's any doubt that Trinity KNEW that Dex was going to kill him. So, why not slaughter Rita and leave a mess. Great ending to the season, but I stand by my opinion that killing off Rita that abruptly is breaking the rules. Anyone can GUESS what might happen. And yes, the whole season was about the balancing act between the Dark Passenger and the family guy...but I don't see how that justifies striking down the second-most important character on the show!

It's a very FITTING end to the season, just broke too many rules, for me. That's just my 2¢. Can't wait until next fall!

Yea, but why would Trinity not even mention it...

The way that scene with Trintity's death played out, at least for me....I almost felt sorry for him. He is basically telling Dexter that he has no control over what he does. So after an entire season of seeing all these brutal murders, family violence, etc. suddenly you're lead to feel some compassion for him. (Dexter even set up the train set and played the record for him, that seemed to be an act of kindness rather than taunting him)

So you almost feel sorry for the guy and then BAM! Dexter goes home and you know what happens next.

he was refined enough to quietly keep the knowledge to himself, knowing what awaited Dexter's arrival home.

Yes! Exactly! That to me is great script writing. I don't know about "breaking rules", but I'll respect your opinion, Mike.

I was really just a passive fan of this show, but after these last few episodes, I am hooked and also can't wait for next season.

*****SPOILERS*****

Very late to the party but I just wanted to add to this after re-watching the series.

Trinity most definitely killed Rita. The interviews have sealed that but the real money is when Dexter has Arthur on the table and Dex talks to him about family. Just pay close attention to Lithgow. His facial reaction and eyes tell the story. Superb acting!

As for leaving the blood. The writers wanted little Harrison to be found much like Dexter was. A nice touch.

What a great show.

Great interview! Spoilers of course.

Final thoughts and more spoilers.

I hope Rita returns much in the same way Harry does. A ghostly figure observing Dexter's actions. It would really mess with his head as he has to be wondering what Trinity said to her before taking her life, if anything. Just the thought of it would be enough to drive him crazy.

Also an easy way to keep her involved with the show a little longer.

In the end though, I always found her a tad annoying. :)
