Detector blues

In our apartments we are required by law to have “SMOKE DETECTORS” hanging on the wall. I’ve had gatherings in my house where the air has been so thick with cigarette smoke you need a knife to cut through it. The smoke detector sits silent through the whole event. If you boil a pot of water on the stove or have a shower with the door open the ****ing thing goes ballistic! What kind of mutant technology is this and why am I required by law to put up with its ill conceived design? Some days I swear I’d rather burn to death than tolerate more senseless racket from this poor misguided piece of electronic Hoo Haa! I’ve lived in a lot of apartments in my life, and these ****ers never, ever work….Ever!!! If the powers that be are requiring me to have this water vapor sniffer/ smoke detector in my home then I want one that work DAMNED IT!

Mine is hardwired right into the wall and is provided by the management. I guess to them my life is worth no more than five bucks. I am now going to phone the lanlord every time it goes off for the wrong reason and just hold the phone up to it till it stops....After all if we are overcome by shower steam, he has a right to know!

Good point, surf. I never thought about that. So it's more of a heat detector than a smoke detector. Steam is hot, smoke is cool. Wait, I don't mean "smoking is cool." Anyway, sounds like that's the problem. Ahhhh another happy ending.

Down a few feet from the smoke detector lives a heat detector, also required where I live. Fortunately this device is on its game. No this liitle beeaachh is a measuring device for particulates in the air. If you directly blow smoke at it it will go off. Hving said that, it would probably go off if you threw a bucket of water at it. It doesn't measure heat though.
