I have a 24p time line that Im working with and I want to import some dvd footage that I have. I THINK it's 24p as well as I made it in a 24 p time line then exported it to dvd. Ugh . I need to get video from these dvds then put it in the new project Im working with. Whenever I try to do this its all fast and jittery. PLEASE HELP! I am desperate.

What is the DVD? (this is illegal if it's not your own DVD btw). Do you know whether it was encoded at 29.97 or 23.98? And how are you ripping it?

This is own my dvd of my own shorts. I edited them in the 24 p time line then I encoded them with compressor and then burned them with TOAST. How would I check to see if it was 23.98? Im pretty sure I made them in 23.98.

Well that starts to get into how you're pulling them off the DVD. Some of these tools do a better job at converting than others. And by no means can you just drop footage from a DVD directly into FCP. This site is probably where you need to be looking:

If the DVD is not Macrovision protected you can always run an s-video cable from the DVD player to your DV deck or camera and save some effort. Sourcing footage from DVD is compromised quality at best so you're not losing much going that way.

do you suggest a program for ripping? Im really not doing anything illegal. I just stupidly made all my 'master copies' M2V files. It was a long time ago and I didnt know what I was doing. Now I cant bring them back to use them in other projects. I just want to get it back so the FRAME RATE in my dvd sketches is the same as the project Im working on now.

Like, I have the M2V files and AC3 files. Does that help at all??

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!

MPEG Streamclip is free for macs (I think) and can rip video from a dvd into either M2V or Quicktime. You can then use FCP to see if it is 24fps or 30fps. It might not be the greatest quality, but as Noah says, you're already working with compressed footage.

I just found the solution. Thanks for all your help dudes. In the future. If you have a dvd that is 23.98fps and you want to grab footage and drop it into a time line for later. Use mpeg streamclip and turn the footage BACK into an M2V file AND a AIFF file. Then just drop the footage back into the time line. It has to render but it works fine. There IS a loss of quality but it will play at the normal rate! YEAAA

hi everyone

Can someone tell the right way to get the film look of 24fps in fcp please.....
there is so many ways of RECORDING, CAPTURING and put it in the right SEQUENCES timeline......
Do I need to put clips of 29.97 fps in 29.97 sequence and put clips of 23.97 in 23.97 sequence
Thanks....

NEVER try to edit with a M2V file, you're asking for tons of trouble. You want a standard NTSC QT file. M2V won't do you any favors, and will give you headaches.

You can drop any footage of any frame rate in any Sequence, it'll play at normal speed. FCP will conform it to the timeline. Droping 30fps into a 24fps timeline may cause you to have to render or not, depending on what Mac you're on. But will play at normal speed.

If you got a deck that will allow a pass through that can work. I just imported a bunch of stuff over the weekend that I now have on my Myspace and on Youtube that I pulled right off a DVD, imported n FCP, edited, then uploaded to the web! So my set up is: DVD player>Sony GVD-1000 miniDV deck>FW from Sony to G5 desktop. The stuff on DVD was my own projects so there was no problem. I also with no problems was able to import a scene from a store bought DVD too. I was actually playing the drums in this particular movie.
