Tips that is...
Just thought I’d throw this out to all you people who’s desktops are out of control. I had to look for a program on a friends computer the other day and there was so much stuff on the desktop it made it hard to find anything. Anyhow, the jpg image below shows my desktop as it usually looks. I have eight shortcuts to folders and required stuff like “My Computer, Recycle Bin” The background is black, so I created black file folders so they hide nicely and only the referring text is visible. Here is what the folders are and what they do from left to right.
1 System (Shortcut to a created file on C drive) This folder contains shortcuts to system maintenance files like Disk defragmenters, msconfig any programs I use to keep the system healthy.
2 Docs…This is a shortcut to “My Documents” It is a shortcut so as I can change the icon to black. This folder handles all my text documents through subfolders within.
3 Main…This is C drive usually called “ My Computer” all I did was change the name to be different and changed its icon to the black folder.
4 Control…This is just a shortcut to control panel with an icon change. I don’t go into it much but it’s right there when I need it.
5 Explorer…Again, just a shortcut to “Windows Explorer” I just shortened the name and changed the icon. I Know it’s a WINDOWS explorer and not a basement explorer…Shorter is better in my book.
6 Hold…One of my key folders, it’s a shortcut to a folder on D drive. This folder is what really keeps the desktop clean. Everything I download and decide to keep ends up in “Hold”…Software updates, downloaded video, saved images and documents…Anything that is eventually going to be archived goes into hold. It’s the top of the fridge for my desktop and as such you’ve got to go through it now and again.
7 Network…Shortcut with icon change to “My Network Places” again, I just shortened it up.
8 Deskvid…This is simply a shortcut with icon change to black to the desktop on my other machine. I do this for time saving reasons, I transfer a lot of files to that machine from this one so there’s the desktop…Drag and drop without going through the “My Network Places” hoops.
9 Trash….Actually called “Recycle Bin” but changed to “Trash” in Norton Antivirus…This is nothing short of Mac envy!
All my software is located as shortcuts in that bottom toolbar thingy and told to hide when not in use.
Anyway, this concludes Mino’s super anal desktop organizational lesson for today…Hope it helps someone, somewhere.
Oh yes...The trash folder icon is set to balck unless there is something in it to be emptied in which case it goes blue
Oh yes #2 The second half of the desktop on my secon monitor is black with i pic of Nat Portman on it
