there has been a lot of threads about music copyright, and other money things.
now I don't understand 1 thing: if I make a film and I don't to pay the copyright fees, I can put it on my website for free with a sentence at the end: this film is just a demonstration of my skills?

You can play in traffic blindfolded, but you know you're gonna eventually get creamed.

sometimes its not that bad.

i did a thing where i used an amon tobin track as the score. just out of curiousity i emailed his record label and was like hey, i did this thing, dont want to make any money off of it, i just want to have it on my site and maybe in a film fest...totaly no profit. the label wanted to see it. after they saw it they were like...sure dude, totaly, just sign this thingy that says all your going to do is use it for your website/festival for nonprofit and you can use it. it was pretty easy, not saying they will all be like that but its worth a shot.

and now i get free ninja tunes (the label) samplers in the mail every so often.

i also called fox about a well known composers track i wanted to use from a movie. they were like cool, and started to process the request, it took way to long and i needed it for a festival, so i had to cut the track out of the short. if it werent for needing it so quickly it probly would have happened (i waited to the last minute). it would have cost some cash, less then 500.

As a demo, on your site, no money being made......

Don't worry about it, using music for this type of thing is a very time proven, and understood thing.

Don't let the sounds of impending doom and the jack boots coming down the hall beating your door down worry you.

At the very most, and it's only slightly more likely that winning the lottery, you get a notice to remove the clip from your site. If you're simply using the music to show your skills, no worries.

Pookie is absoultly right, this sort of thing is well understood for demo reels, however, and I may be wrong on this, putting it on the internet may expose you legally. Placeing a tape in the hands of a producer and putting something on the internet are two diffrent things. Most likely you won't have any trouble, but I would avoid putting copyright music on the web.

But as I said, IANAL, and Pookie probably has it right.
