You can get the dell 2405 monitor directly from dell for $699 and some change by applying this code at checkout

code=0N82XLMD0K1XTD

Just thought I would pass that along.
Probably the best deal out there for a wide screen 24 inch monitor. Some like it, some don't.

In about 2 weeks, the replacement 2407 will be out, hence the huge discount.

Just ordered one. Actually, there is another coupon which takes yet another $60 off of this for a total of $639 including shipping. I find it on dealcoupon.com and did a search for Dell 2405.

Great monitor but Dell is such a frustrating company to deal with.

That's a screaming deal. The Dell makes a fantastic computer monitor. Lousy video monitor, but for a 24" 1920x1200 computer monitor, it's first-rate.

Actually, in the FCP world there is a way to make it a better video monitor-- Matrox previewed their MXO box which will take DVI output and convert to what they call "broadcast quality" HD. While it works best with the Apple Cinema Display 23 because of sync-timing issues, it looks just about as good with the HP2335 and Dell 2405. By the time it ships, they should have that small issue resolved. I'll be getting an eval unit from Matrox but at a $995 price point, this could really be a major solution to the whole question of monitoring HD/HDV. In fact, I will test it with both the Dell and the Apple Cinema display to see if I can tell any difference. But the Matrox box effectively turns a Cinema Display into a video LCD monitor via DVI while also providing SDI output with 8-channel embedded audio.

Update-- just checked again to get coupon # for posting and I see that Dell has invalidated the 30% coupon. Guess I was lucky and got it at the right time...

There has been some discussion that the Dell's component input leaves a lot to be desired. I believe that is true. I have 3 Dell 2405's and one is being used as my preview out. HD-SDI out from my Kona 3 to an AJA HDP that converts the HD signal to DVI, then DVI out to the Dell. It may not match a $$$$ HD CRT in terms of absolute quality, but in my system it rocks. My video looks real good!

I'll test that as well since I have a Kona 2 and HDP converter. I also intend, as I think I may have mentioned, to be testing it with the Matrox MXO since I will be reviewing the product for a national magazine.

I got one of these for $500 despite being flat broke a few weeks ago (it's a refurb but I can't tell; I don't even think it says it on the box) and it's just amazing. I can't recommend this monitor enough....

The viewing angle isn't that great in the dark blacks, though.

What do you reccomend Barry?

The field monitor I use most is the Panasonic 17". Not mine, it's Jay's, but I'm tempted to get one. 17", side-by-side frame store, and waveform monitor, plus VESA mount lets you mount it on a c-stand.

In fact I'm using it today, so I'm going to try DV Rack next to it just to convince myself whether DV Rack would be good enough, and if it isn't, I'll have to get the Panasonic one...
