Dell 24" 2407WFP

Jeff Anderson

Custom Title!
I know for a while there was a buzz about this monitor since its relatively inexpensive and has component in and displays full HD at the correct aspect ratio. Havent heard much about people using it as a studio monitor recently - I basically just want it for framing and focus. Not color or levels at all. Does this monitor work well enough to pull focus off of with a 35mm adapter? Mounting, power, and weight, arent issues.

Oh and theres a 15% off coupon for anyone interested, brings the price down to just under 600 or so.

Also going to try and just make my own d4 to component cable - why hasnt anyone done this yet? Just need the right pin crimper, dies, etc for d4 and rca right? and some fancy cable :) I'll let you all know if I can figure something out.

Thanks!

Jeff

I'm using the 23", but as an editing monitor. I am also doing the rent to own, and really paying for it. That $600 price tag is sweet though.

Yeah at the price I may just get it and use it for a computer monitor if I dont like it... Dont really NEED another computer monitor right now - two dell 20s at work and two samsung 20s at home... I'm sure I'll find it a home :) Still would love to hear if anyone has any more comments on using the component inputs on this.

I have mine sitting ona wall, about 6' in front of my desk. I had to use a 25' section of s-vid cable to reach it, and really can't afford to buy that long a componant cable, and don't really have the ability to send a componant signal out... so, long story short, can't help ya ;)

But it's still purty :)

I was looking at the Dell for the exact reasons you specify. Studio, focus, framing. I ended up buying this one instead:

It bested the Dell in all of the reviews I could find, and it's got an HDMI input (not that it helps with the HVX, but it's nice to know you could plug HDMI into it if you needed to). It's a great monitor, and fulfills all of the above requirements.

I´ve the 2405 and for video it sucks (has been discussed here big time btw...), as a computer monitor its perfect!
When I got the HVX I checked the video displaying, it is noisey like poltergeist, but for focus and framing it works - but a 24" is really clumsy for that, unless you do fixed camera studio shots...
I than got the Sony 17" (out of production unfortunately) and finally got the Totevision 7" HD LCD.
But now I have two broken component cables(!) and can´t use any - so if you come up with an more sturdy alternative cable let me know!

i dont think these dells were ever intended to be high end HDTVs or production field monitors. they have the connections to do it, but i think thats as much a marketing effort as anything else.

ive been using the dell 2405 for about 3 years now and as a computer monitor its superb.

Cool I've read through most if not all the posts concerning it but they all seem to go back to it being noisy and totally innaccurate for colors/levels and those things dont bother me. I'm starting a series of videos that will mainly be shot in a kitchen and we'll be setup in the kitchen for a few days at a time so I figured this would work out well. I'd go for an on camera but I know the client too well and know that she'll be right on top of the camera watching so maybe this will give me some space to breathe too :) And for the price I may just get an on-camera one too.

Thanks for the tip on the BenQ krestofre, the HDMI input could be handy.

It may be a few days til I figure out if the cables are going to be feasible to build, but I'll make sure and put sturdy into my design criteria and give them plenty of built in strain relief without being too bulky and unweildly. Not looking to sell them as a business but I'd be willing to sell them at cost to those who are interested.

Want a good 24"?

Gateway FPD2485W

You won't be disappointed. With the price or the image quality when you connect your HVX or any other source.

Hey thanks for all the responses - I'll be looking at the Dell, Gateway, and BenQ and weighing my options out here. As far as making D4 cables it looks like its not going to happen - nobody sells d4 connectors that I can find at least. Plenty of cables out there as the xbox, ps3, and a bunch of japanese tvs are using these but no bare terminals. For now I'll just get a component extension for my existing cable. I did find that Hirose makes a d4 to component cable but I couldnt find a reseller in the states. RSAustralia carries it for 150 Aus if i remember right which sounds too rich for me. As far as mounting one of these to a c-stand it looks like a baby plate can just be ground down to match and some new holes drilled. Then just go into a gobo head and I'm set. Yay.

Kholi - how does this do with a 720P signal - the manual online wasnt all that clear as to how its scaling worked. Just looking to make sure it maintains aspect ratio but scales to the full screen width. The manual makes it sound like the screen is 16:9 - its 16:10 right?

I've got dual 24" Samsung Syncmaster 245BW's and they are sweet (1900x1200) running off the Radeon 1900. Of course nothing really beats my Sony BVM-D20U with HD-SDI, but that sucker is worth $20,000+.

Oh, the cost on the Syncmasters? 509.00 each on Buy.com.

I have a gateway 24". and I love it.
And it has component inputs.

it is a 16x10 monitor. but u can set it to show 1:1 ratio, so it will show the aspect correctly. and it will have black bars on top and bottom.

What monitor did you end up getting? I have 24" and 22" right now and I love both. Gateway's.

720, 1080, it all looks good on this set.

Check with USLatin as well. He's got a 24" in a box setup and it looks sweet.

I ended up with the gateway 24" - I love it - its noisy and I dont trust the color, but for focusing its fantastic! I will say though for 720 material its not the greatest, I only use it with a 1080 signal though.
