DEFY G2X Gimbal

I was originally looking into the DEFY G2X gimbal and then the Ronin-M gimbal was announced at NAB 2015...

- The Ronin-M can balance a camera package up to 8 lbs vs the G2X capacity of only 3.5 lbs.

- The Ronin-M cross bar can be removed so you can hold it just by the center handle and still control the gimbal via the thumb controller or have a 2nd person control the gimbal using the included remote controller.

- The Ronin-M battery lasts 6 hours, the G2X lasts for 2 hours.

- The Ronin-M has a "silent mode" to accommodate audio recording

- The Ronin-M will cost less than $2,000

I appreciate that, but I am not interested in the Ronin for various reasons.
I would like to hear any input regarding the DEFY.

Thanks.

I am curious what your reasons are, as I've read a few reviews from people that really liked the original Ronin gimbal.

Even with this review of the CAME Mini gimbal, in the first few minutes these guys talk about how much they love the Ronin gimbal.

1)I have not had a good experience with their customer service.

2)I live in Mexico, which has super high import duties on cameras, electronics etc. My friend is coming for a visit within the next couple of weeks and he has agreed to bring down about $8,000 worth of camera equipment for me including the gimbal which will save me the import duties on the equipment since he will bring it as personal belongings. If I waited for the Ronin, it would mean an additional $500-$1,000 I would need to spend just on transporting to me as well as duties. The Ronin isnt worth the extra money from where I stand.

Here are a few advantages of the DEFY G2X:
The G2X can be balanced on any flat surface. The Ronin-M needs a stand.
DEFY customer service is EXCELLENT. DJI's service is notoriously HORRIBLE.

If you are flying a GH4, A7s, or DSLR moderately equipped, the G2X would be a great choice.
The Ronin-M will obviously handle a heavier load if needed- but if you have a problem- who ya gonna call?

I love my G2x but wished that there were audible beeps that confirm which camera mode you're in. One audible beep when you press the auto tune button once, 2 beeps mode 2, and 3 beeps mode 3. I just like official confirmation.

When running and gunning this is the perfect style gimbal. Instead of using the top handle how they show it, I use it as a "permanent" stand so I can set it down whenever I need. For weddings, I film solo, I can set this on the ground for a locked shot and slightly tilt up for a low angle while I jump to another cam on a trip or slider.

My GH4 is on a manfrotto quick release so if need be I can quickly remove the cam from the gimbal and throw it on a monopod, tripod or slider. Even though you can use this for slider shots you're limited as you can't rack or pull focus if you're trying to add that element into your push/reveal/etc.

Things the G2x needs:
1. audible audio confirmation for which camera mode you're in.

2. Battery life indicator so you know when you should swap batteries before it goes dead (the gimbal literally just turns off when the battery doesn't have enough charge)

3. A dedicated mount similar to what I did with my top handle to act as a stand. That way I can keep my top handle where it's actually suppose to be mounted in case I go in underslung mode.

4. The ability to fine tune the "follow mode" for each axis. Sometimes I want to dial down how sensitive the follow mode reacts to my movements. There are days I'm sloppy so it would be nice to be able to have some slack in my movements so dialing in less sensitivity would be great. Additionally, it would be great to have the ability to dial in more sensitivity to give more of a hand held shakey feel without actually going handheld.

See pic of how I mounted the top handle to act as a permanent stand.

All this is easy to do in the Simple BGC software. You can change the functionality of the red button, like have it change follow modes, or anything else you can think of. If you need help, call Defy and they'll walk you through it. Excellent customer service that you won't get from DJI.

**Be sure you download version 2.43b9. Version 2.50b3 will wipe your settings!!**

Have you considered the Moza Lite?
I was tossing up the other two mentioned in this thread and eventually went with the Moza Lite.
I haven't received it yet. However, I am expecting it to come in the next fortnight.
I'll let you know how it goes.
What exactly do you want from a gimbal? What are some of the short-comings you wish to avoid?
