Just wondering how often you people defragment your hard drives. With all the heavy duty creative work done on most of our machines I'm wondering if people are paying attention to this computer health issue.
1. Before and after capturing
2. Before (usually) and after (always) rendering
Every two weeks if not capturing or rendering video, along with my boot drive. I would recommend a third party defrag program. And I never, ever, no matter what, use any software written by Symantec.
Frizzle, what third party defragger do you recommend? And why don't you recommend Symantec? I'm using Norton Systemworks, which is why I'm curious. It's incredibly slow to defrag and wouldn't mind something faster.

Hey disjecta, how did you set up that macro. I would like to do that also.
Here's how to set up a macro on a Windows machine to automatically schedule a defragmentation of drives of your choosing:
Open up notepad and type the following:
defrag x:
That's all you have to type, where "x" is the name of the drive you want defragmented. You can choose to defrag more than one drive by doing the following:
defrag x:
defrag y:
defrag z:
Just fill in the actual drive letters that are appropriate on your computer.
Next, save the file as: defragall.cmd
Save it somewhere you can access easily like the c root directory, for instance.
Next go to CONTROL PANEL->Scheduled Tasks
Click on Add Scheduled Task. Click NEXT in the wizard, then BROWSE. Browse to the file you just created. Click OPEN and this will ask you to name the task and you can choose exactly how you would like to schedule this task.
Click DAILY and then NEXT. Choose a time and start date. Click NEXT. Create a username and password for this task. Click NEXT. Leave the box unchecked and hit the FINISH button and, voila, you are done and your computer will defrag all the drives you selected at the specified time and you won't have to worry about it after that.

Amen Brother.
I generally defragment every two weeks when I am not editing. When editing I constantly check to see if it is needed on all of my hard drives, generally everyday.
"And why don't you recommend Symantec?"
Symantec simply has too many programs running in the background and sometimes does wierd stuff. I use Computer Associates (CA) EZ Trust software. Quiet and doesn't take up tons of resources.
I usually defrag once a week. I use diskkeeper. It is simply the best defragmenting app i've seen. It's very quick unlike the default windows defragger. I think they have a demo you can try here http://www.executive.com/downloads/menu.aspx
I used to defrag all the time. Now the last time I remember defraging was 2 years ago. I don't even think I remember how to defrag. Plus defraging 1 terabyte is going to take too long anyway. If it needs it defrag it.
I have a Matrox RTX100 card which is sensitive to fragmentation on the hard drive, so I do it every two weeks or so, no less than once a month, both my system drive and my audio-visual drive(s).
I had wierd issues ONE TIME with Premiere Pro, which turned out to be a fragmentation issue, so that's why I do it. I just use Window's Defragment utility, and usually during dinner, or some other time when I'll be away from the 'puter for an hour or more.

Thanks for the tip on Diskeeper Sean. Downloaded it for $30 ($20 after rebate)
It's an excellent app! Way better then windows defragger.

Um...the Windows defrag is Diskkeeper. Just not the high-speed, low-drag version you just bought. ;D
I second Executive Software's Diskkeeper. It is the full blown version of what's bundled with Windows. Totally way faster.
Muir's right: Any software with "Norton" in the name is infamous for hogging system resources and doing behind-the-scenes activities that can cause anomolous system behaviors. Several programs and services running all the time. And it never seems to fully uninstall (like AOL).
I've seen System Works "accidentally" delete half the data on a server. All this after I told them "Don't use Norton, whatever you do."
really rookie question here. but what does defraging do to your comp? and why should i do it? i've been afraid to do it cuz im afraid i'll lose something :-[
