Defocusing An Image

Hey Guys,
I have a kind of odd question. I am basically filming a scene which I will later edit to be black and white, BUT I wish the beginning of the scene to be completely unfocused. So the beginning is a white unfocused blob(which will focus to reveal a person) surrounded by black and slowly as the scene progresses come into focus. I understand the focus ring needs to be set on manual but I cant seem to get the effect I want. I wish there to be an obvous and slow focusing as the scene progresses but it doesn't seem to be long enough by just using the focusing ring.

Anyone know a particular reason why the camera will not de-focus as far as possible? Are there any lenses or tricks anyone knows to really defocusing the camera and then slowly bringing it back into focus? Thanks for all the help in advance!

yeah barry is right- post is easiest. but if you want to do it the "real" way:
try stepping back from your subject and zooming the lens as long as you can while still getting the composition right. also try to get your aperture open as wide as you can (use the nd filter, faster shutter, adjust the lighting, etc.) the longer lens thing may or may not work for your composition, i don't know. but with the above steps you'll have a shorter depth of field, which will help make the "defocused" stage be more out of focus.

If done in post I wouldn't just use a blur filter but instead a "real" focus simulation tool like Lenscare from Frischluft (http://www.frischluft.com) or something from GenArts or others... this looks so much better (read: realistic) than a simple blur!
