Define Irony

It's like "goldy" or "bronzy", but made out of iron.

FTW :)

R.E. anti-helmet law people? I have NEVER understood that argument (and I've had bikes my whole life). Let's all fight for our right to take needless risks! Yay! (in all fairness... the worthless lids that most cruiser riders wear... the "rain caps"... probably wouldn't save them anyway)

I wonder how many other protesters will mourn his death, instead of cursing him for making the blatantly obvious case against their cause? I guess he died doing what he loved most... risking a fatal injury.

I get the argument. It's a rather childish DON'T YOU TELL *ME* WHAT TO DO!

Okay, fair enough. But if'n you happen to sustain a head injury while riding without a lid - don't tell your insurance company that they ought to help cover your medical (or your next-of-kin tell 'em to cover your funeral) expenses, and don't expect that the taxpayers will, either.

Is how it *ought* to be, anyway.

For my part I'm not mourning this one bit. One fewer dumbasses making the motorcycling community look bad with his idiocy, is one fewer dumbasses making the motorcycling community look bad with his idiocy.

Wanna' win an easy bet? Always bet that people will do whatever is best for them in a bad situation... no matter what they said before they found themselves in it.

Just like drinking, smoking, over-eating, blah, blah, blah... everybody proudly calls it a lifestyle choice that they will accept full responsibility for "even if it kills me"... until it looks like it's going to kill them... and then all that sh*t is out the window.

In theory... I agree with your point... let them choose no-helmet for no-insurance/help from a needless head injury... but that 'aint the way the cranium bounces :) People agree to anything to get their way... even if it's childish and selfish... until it costs them something... then they cry for Mr. Wizard to fix it.

Well, there's the way things ought to be, and then there's the way things is.

Ideally people choosing to ride helmet-free would sign a waiver and get a little sticker on their license (like the organ donor opt-in...hey, overlap!) that would inform EMT and ER personnel how to log them if they wind up going down with cranial injuries. Kind of making it impossible to back out, should the temptation arise.

Unbelievable.

This is an article about someone's death. I certainly expected a more mature and respectful attitude from the DVX community that I've come to admire and more than once have contrasted to the typical, calous and thoughtless comments I read on other sites and forums.

There is a sticky in the Cafe for a user named Matt Grunau whom I never knew but from the outpouring of emotion and sympathy I'd guess he was a pretty talented, respected and loved guy. What I do know from reading about him is that he made some bad choices- like we all do from time to time. Those choices ultimately brought him to his end just like the rider in the article.

This guy wasn't asking to be taken care of by taxpayer's money. And he certainly wasn't some career criminal scumbag we read about every day who finally came to some karmatic end. To read that someone thinks an unfortunate accident that results in death is "hysterical" sickens me.

The other issues like the helmet law or a perceived fleecing of the insurance companies is another subject altogether.

This forum is supposed to pride itself on "respecting others". Not this time.

One thing I never got..
In my state you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet, but inside of a car if you're not wearing your seat belt you can
get pulled over and ticketed.

Hmmm.

*shrug* I'm content to advertise up-front that I don't know anything at all about the decedent in terms of his life outside the event which ended it. So basically - for my part - I'm responding to a caricature. And where that caricature managed to terminate his existence not only in a spectacularly stupid and careless manner, while at the same time disgracing the motorcycling community of which I am a member, I don't think the focus is particularly on the hand-wringing-tragic-loss-etc-etc-etc. As for 'karma' - not that I am invested in the concept, but since you indicated that mockery of a criminal getting his 'just desserts' is apparently more palatable to you, try this on: here's an individual campaigning against the use of a vital item of safety equipment - thereby encouraging others to take potentially fatal and unnecessary risks - who manages to kill himself in the process of that campaign, precisely -because- he wasn't using it. If that ain't a manifestation of people usually refer to as 'karma,' I don't know what would be.

As you may have noticed, conversations on this and other web fora have a tendency to wander, which is how we arrived at taxpayer money, insurance payouts, etc.

Respect is for people who have earned it, or, at the very least, who haven't made it virtually impossible to accord it to them.
