Scy Fy has a new show coming out in April of 2013 called 'Defiance.'
"Defiance is a visionary enterprise in collaboration with Trion Worlds, with the Syfy series and Trion’s multi-platform shooter MMO poised to debut simultaneously. Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the human and alien survivors of a universal war. Forced to co-habitate, the disparate group struggles to build a new society among the devastation. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story."
Now I would say this is a very intriguing concept, and it looks like it could be the future of online gaming to couple it with an interactive show. However both the show and game look aweful, so my level of optimism is pretty low. Plus them over-selling the game and tv show is kind of off putting. "the most immersive, gritty, revolutionary..."
They could have at least gone with a more established MMO studio.
I'm also curious exactly how will they tie the game in with the show. I get show->game, but game->show is a bit confusing. They say it happens as the show is aired. If it's a weekly series, then the show has to be shot and edited within that week to incorporate what happens in the game (which isn't possible since theoretically gamers will want everything within that week to effect the show the next day). If that is the case then it may not effect the show very much, maybe just a line here, or a shot there. "Oh the battle in "insert place" didn't go very well, anyways back to the story"
They may just shoot alternate scenes, but again how much flexibility does that really give them?
