Dedolights - any good?

Hi,
I have been offered a deal on a set of Dedolights (see dedolight.com) including 4 lampheads, stands, barndoors, filterholders, gels, spare bulbs and a case for about 1.500 USD. Does anybody have experience with those lights? I intend to use them as an alternative to fresnels and along 2 Kinos (1 x two-bank, 1 x four-bank).

Re: Dedolights - any good?

Dedos are great. I'd buy them for that price if it were offered. The girlfriend might object, but I'd try to talk her into it.

They're very focused, small beam lights, but they're powerful lightweight and put out a hell of a kick. I wouldn't say that they could serve as a primary kit, but they'd really compliment two primaries (say along with kinos as you suggest).

Beause of the size of the package, the light output and the amp draw, they're perfect for location interiors along with kinos.

Re: Dedolights - any good?

They are great for acents. The kit is small, and comact, and easy to use. They tend to be very sourcey (I think that is a word), tough to break down with diffusion. The kinos are a very nice compliment to them. You may find yourself wanting perhaps one larger source fernel (300-600) to give you and inbetween option. Oh and the case is heavy as snot for its size.

Re: Dedolights - any good?

thanks for the info. I think I'll get the Dedos and an additional Arri Junior 300 or 600 Fresnel just to be on the safe side.

Re: Dedolights - any good?

yes, but the guys at Arri call all their portable fresnels "Junior" no matter if it is a 150 W or 5 kW light.

Re: Dedolights - any good?

Perhaps you're speaking to the wrong guys at Arri. Who's telling you it's a junior light?

Re: Dedolights - any good?

well, just check the Arri website and you'll see that they call their portable series of fresnels "Junior" to distinguish them from the "Studio" series of fresnels.

Re: Dedolights - any good?

Wow, that IS bizzare. I even checked the mount on the light and it's listed as a baby mount, so it makes no sense that they would call those lights juniors.

The 2k is a junior. The 5k is called a senior, but it does indeed have a junior spud.

On set, the 150 would be called an inkie, a pepper, or an inbetweenie depending on your preference, the 300 would be a Betweenie, the 650 would be a Tweenie, the 1k would be a Baby or Baby-Baby.

That is really odd that they would name all those lights as juniors. Maybe it's because they're german... ;D

Re: Dedolights - any good?

I think it's because they don't want to use the terminology that relates to the Mole-Richardson products altough they are used as standard terms by most gaffers in the industry.
