Rented a couple of DEDO 300s for a shoot last week to augment other lights.
They are pretty cool freznells with barn doors and built in dimmers. But at $650.00 CA a pop, are they worth it?
Anything else like that light with a lighter price?
did you also rent the accessories (like the projection attachment, etc) then you'll know why people plunk out the 1.5K per light head (with accessories)
I can't think of anything that is as nice a set of Dedo's.
To answer your question, at their current size, nothing comes close to these as far as quality, build, and reliability.
The closest thing is more than 3 times the size, and your talking an elippsodial, stage type fixture. You can buy them for half the price, depending on the lens you get, some people buy them with zoom lenses. But instead of 100-200-300 watts, they start at around 500 watts, and average 750 watts.
I love these fixtures for product work, and projecting patterns.
I wish someone would attempt to make a less pricey version of these. If they do, I haven't seen them yet. Maybe a company by the name of Frezzi..(sp?) could produce them, their lights are small, but from what I have seen, are mostly on-camera type floods.
I like the dedo's but they are grossly expensive. I use source 4 575 ellipsoidals. They have more punch, cheaper($225.00), but heavier to carry around. In the past I refused to use flourescents until cool lights started selling them at a reasonable price. It would be cool if Richard at cool lights could make a dedo clone for less than half price.
I assume those 300w models are tungsten right? I agree it would be super cool to have a metal halide (like 150w) small spotlight like a dedo. In general if you can get me interested in using a fixture in my own work--you might get me interested in making it too...
I have several Dedolight 150's with the built-in 24v ballast. Words cannot describe how great they are.. Buy right, cry once I always say (instead of every time you pull one out of the case). The most recent Dedo 150 I bought was only $550 brand new (they are normally $700) by way of the Live.com / eBay 25% Cash back offer. Although, the cash back has been reduced to 15%, it's still a pretty good deal on one of the best lights you'll ever own.
After using / owning Dedolights, I wouldn't fuss with small fresnels anymore... They are THAT good. The 60mm Projection Lens is killer!
Got 3 dedo DLH4 150w with daylight filters, no projection attachement so far, but a suction mount for one soon enough. Pricey but solid. Their flood-spot-mechanism is patented by the way.
