Dedo lights

After Reading tons of posts and not getting specific feedback on my post I've decided to get dedo lights. The question remains now, which one. I am going to get a speed ring and soft box but there are so many options to get. Can someone please point me in the right direction. I need to place an order by Tuesday . Thanks so much. Also which speed ring, soft box and dimmer for my dedo light

Cirrolite are the distributors in the UK and they'll give you all the advice you need. They are based in London and you can go over and go through the kit that you need. they are very helpful over the phone too. If you are elsewhere, they'll tell you who your local distributor is.

I hope it helps.

thanks boss really appreciate it. Ill check it out.

But if I cant get a hold of them when I need to. Using a DEDO and a soft box, should I do better than the 150W Classic Tungsten. Maybe like a 200W or even 400W. Obviously with 1 light having that much power isnt always ideal and will be really hard.

THanks again

I've got the Dedo 1000plus head with the 5ft Octodome. probably the best light I've ever bought and I've owned a few in my time.

In saying that however, I'd probably change it for the 4x 150w head with the additional 4 way dimmer pack. The only reason for doing this is the fact that I would then have a single bulb type for my large source and my smaller DLH4's.

If you invest in any kind of Dedo kit it will last you a life time and if you decide to sell it on the re-sale value is still very good.

So, to re-cap, I'd look at getting the following:

1x DLH4x150S Tungsten Soft Light
1x DT4x150 Power Supply
1x DSBOCT Dedoflex Octodome
1x D8Clip (for mounting the Octome to the head)

The above would give you a corking large soft light with the equivalent light output of a 2k but only draws 600w current.

Steadicam you are in Edinburgh, I live right outside of Glasgow. :) Small world.

Thanks for the advice this is something Ive needed. Is it possible for you to send me links to each item at BHPHOTOVIDEO. my sister is coming to visit me and i want to order some of this asap. Ive looked at BH Photo but there are tons of items with similiar names and I want to be sure to order the right equipment.

I see the DLH4 but it has a dimmer with it. I dont really understand what power supply is. If I get this from American can I use it here in Scotland. You are a star.

Magic

Your not going to be saving much by purchasing the gear stateside as it's just as expensive over there as it is here.

But if you insist on doing that, here's what you need:

I can't seem to find the D8Clip you would need but Cirro Light here in the UK would sort you out.

The PSU is regulated to be used in the UK. You'll still need to add some bulbs but hey they're £3.50 each and last for ages.

Forgot to ask, what's you budget? as the above is pretty high spec.

That would have been my next step . Right now I've got around 750 - 1000 USD to spend . I'm going to look at the conversion rates and see what they cost here and compare the hassle. If I saw things correctly the dsboct was prety expensive but i'm sure worth it.:)

I was looking at different lights. This is pretty pricey. WOW. The light itself isnt that bad, cheaper then the classic Dedo.

I dont mind getting the light, can this light be used without the Soft box. The killer is the Power Supply. 965 dollars. Thats a lot. Are there other options.

Or what about a single Softbox kit like http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/505795-REG/Dedolight_SJUN_BU_Basic_Junior_Soft_Kit.html

Man lights are really expensive.

Alos, is the 4 way option really versitile?

Honestly, if I was you I would find out your local distributor/ reseller and ask them to demo a kit for you at their shop. Ask them all the questions and they should have kits in their showroom they can show you. Remember, what works great for someone doesn't necessarily works for someone else.

The light head isn't really designed to be used without a softbox.

Lights can be expensive but you are looking at the Roll Royce of Tungsten Lights here. We've established your budget but we still haven't established what the purpose of the single light unit is.

Don't be blinkered by the brand (Dedo) there are some other light manufacturers out there that make perfectly good lights. Arri for example.

I have a couple of True Blue T1 (1k) units. They are the newer generation of fresnel lights from Arri and can be used as either a hard or soft source (dependent on what you put in front of the lens).

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/575691-REG/Arri_551101_T1_Location_Fresnel_.html

You could then add some sort of soft bank to the Arri:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/105283-REG/Chimera_8135_Video_Pro_Plus_Softbox.html#features

and finally a speed ring like this one:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/179167-REG/Chimera_9190_Speed_Ring_for_Video.html

So for just over $1100 (US) Your getting a pretty sweet hard/soft light Combo.

Remember and add a light stand and bulb(s).

But to be honest you'd be better buying this kind of stuff here in the UK.

steadicam.. i think you are right. I can get them quicker here in the UK. My main use is just little interviews with people from my church. I do stuff in some old churches where lighting is POOR and have used PAR Cans but no control, not easy to set-up, really hard lighting. I just want to get a little more proffessional looking videos.

I checked out the Arris. These were actually something I had once looked into until a dealer suggested DEDOs for size and heat. I wanted a lowel kit at first but when i told him i wanted small and portable thats when DEDO came into the picture.

For instance, if I went with the Arri, does it come with power cord? Also, would a reflector be of any benefit to me. Does the light have dimming capability? Would barn doors be beneficial?

Any specifics on bulbs.

Yeah, if the DEDO cant be used with anything beside a 1000 power supply them i just cant justify it. There was a 300 USD power supply on the link you sent me but i am not sure if its compatible.

Lastly, can i just any stand for the softbox and light or is there one you recommend. I may look at ebay and see if there are any of these on sale just now. Thanks mate

******* Is anything for IKAN in lighting worth looking into. They offer some churches discounts and if there lighting was on par with what we are talking about it might be something i can get??

Thanks

Arri UK have some ready to roll packages here:

http://www.arri-shop.com/content/?action=showkits

They also do bespoke kits on-line.

The Arri light I linked to earlier comes with a mains chord with an integral on/off switch on it but no 13amp plug or 16amp CForm. You'd have to wire one on to the end of the chord.

If you buy the Arri T1 at the Arri UK shop it comes complete with mains chord, Barn Doors and gel holder, no dimmer or plug though.

However you can just add an in-line dimmer like this one:

http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/public/view_item_cat.php?catalogue_number=keylite_kl-dim

Stand wise....There's so many to choose from. I've purchased some really cheap 'C' stands from here:

http://www.photomart.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCatalogue=7782STA&inbasket=yes

They aren't very compact, however the base does detach from the upright so it can help when travelling around and they aren't the best of quality but they do exactly what you want them to do.

Finally, reflectors....again so many to choose from. I've started using the California Sunbounce Units. They are very compact (dependent on size you get). Easy to grip with and are pretty solid.

Stead, I was breaking the price down to my wife and she gave me a resounding NO :( that stinks. She said there's no way she can pay 1 grand for a light . She wasn't buying into it.

2 thoughts: are there great cheaper solutions

do you rent your lights out??

Thanks for taking the time to help

There are more cost effective lighting kits out there. But there are some nasty ones as well.

I don't really rent my gear out on dry hire but someone like Hammerhead or Progressive (both have bases in Glasgow) would sort you out for renting a dedo kit. Dedo Kits go out for anything between £40 to £70 per day.

Cool Lights (USA) have some Daylight and Tungsten Fresnels and I've only heard good things about them. Check them out here:

Dedo's are fantastic for what there were designed for - to provide a fantastic spot or a highlight or to create a sharp pattern on the wall -- for this they are worth the price but for everything else there are way cheaper alternatives.

With all this said and my wifes no I may just look into the 1 lowel light with a soft box. My biggest thing I need is a soft box light for interviews for like a 2 day shoot. Seems like getting lights is way more than I had inticipated. You guys have been more than helpful. If there is anymore advice about the ikan lights etc I'll take more help :)
