Deconstruct - Rushmore

I find deconstructing shots one by one facinating and a great learning tool. Maybe this is part 1 of a series of shot analysis. As in Robert Yoeman's work - and the general natural look of Wes Anderson films. How do you think the following scene was lit?

Great idea. I am nowhere near knowledgeable enough to have an educated guess, but I will definitiely be watching this hoping others chime in.

Neither do I. But Fine. I'll start by taking a guess...

KEY: Large tungsten maybe a 2-5K off camera right at almost a 90 degree angle. Probably through two sets of diffusion? or is it a KINO? --- Another 5K with 216 on the background actors but positioned more in front of them.

FILL: large fill same color in front or maybe slightly camera left on main actor. Maybe a ZIP? Another large fill source on the background characters.

Background: a 2K hitting the bleachers. probably set up high above camera left.

RIM/kicker: None

This is just a guess! Any comments? please?

Looks daylight to me....5k Hmi, shot through a 12x12 silk. Another 2.5k shot through a 6x6 on the other side. Additional 1.2k or 2.5 k on background.
If it is tungsten, which I doubt, maybe a Mole 9 light, shot through some fabric. There are some hard edges, so maybe a couple of 1200 watt hmi's or 575's as edge lights.

Well, the way I would light this large church, school is to position 3 or 4 large HMI's outside the windows (sound, heat, control) 12K fresnels would give you enough throw with some type of diffusion (gridcloth, 216 on frames).

I would use 6k pars if the budget and space were tight. (there are no 5k hmi's)

Then you come inside and finish the details. 2.5 or 4k par into a 12x12 for bounce/fill. that's about it.

Where do you see any hard edges. No hard rim on the principal. Looks like some reflection from whatever they were using as the base/fill light in the background

filmat11, why does it look like dayight HMIs to you? and i'm having a hard time seeing th esge light also... the hair on the main subject?

Your right, there are no 5k hmi's, I meant 6k, and I too would have put the lights outside, for the same reason Green Heron suggests, especially the heat.. Since I was trying to describe how I believe the frame grab was lit, versus "How would I light it" , But I believe given the photo, that it APPEARS that they were inside. I am not familiar with the location, nor do I know if the right side of the frame is solid windows or colored, stain glass windows., it's been awhile since i have seen this film, and not sure if this is a classroom, which it looks like or a church...Hence my thought on the lights being inside. My DESCRIPTION of hard light was incorrect, I'll attribute that to being tired after a 12 hour day, followed by a 4 hour drive before making my last post on this thread. I MEANT to say, that additional ,smaller lights were also added to PUNCH some fill. I do not see any discernible edge/hair/seperation light, other than the what apperas to be either a 1200 par or 2.5 par hitting the back wall of the church. Thank you for letting me clarify, after a nights sleep.
Why do I believe that they are HMI's, most churchs/schools have some windows, it would make sense to match daylight. HMI's Pars are more effecient that tungsten fresnels, and put out more light for the same power.
If you were to turn around and tell me that you had spoken to the gaffer that worked this shoot, and he told you that this was actually shot at night, because the church was unavailable during the day....then he/she certainly did a good job making it look like a day shoot.

I would enjoy reading the comments from the gaffer that actually lit this scene....

Maybe looking at other shots in the same scene could give us a better idea of the location... I'll have to wach it again, someday...
