deck question

hi gang...
well  let's see...if I shoot on 24PA mode
can I use my ZR 80 to transfer the footage (capture) to the PC? and will it still have all the characteristics of 24PA mode???????????? (obviously I DON'T wanna wear the DVX's  heads out)

or will it loose any picture quality, besides audio dropouts (known issue)

will the NLE recognize that's 24pa
even if it's not comming from one of those expensive VTR's or the DVX itself?

I know it sounds stupid
:-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Thanx

Re: deck question

It will work the way you want it to -- transfer the data, preserve the 24p, 100% quality, etc. (as long as you're transferring via firewire).

Re: deck question

wow
so why they sell those expensive VTRs to transfer the vid...
or are those for "linear" editors type of stuff?
I've seen'em but I havn't paid any attention to them

so a canon ZR80 ($247.00 at Fry's) will do???

cool thanx Barry

Re: deck question

Well, I don't expect a ZR 80 to last as longa s those. If you use it very frequently, you'll see the difference in about 6 months. My school recently got one of those JVC's double VTRs, it was running great until it went kaput in less than a year. Fragile equipment just can't handle a large workload...

True, an industrial DSR-11 http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DSR11 or BR-DV3000U http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=BRDV3000U can handle a much greater workload than a small DV camera. Also, they can use large and small cassette loads, so you can lay off a 2 or 3-hour movie to one large cassette rather than 2 or 3 small Mini-DV's. They are also more frame-accurate, easier on the media due to logical control tape mechanisms, and much faster in shuttling. However, before I bought my own DSR-11, I used a Canon ZR-20 for digitizing, and it worked fine as long as I didn't batch capture. :)

Re: deck question

yeah I own the DSR-11 (from EVS as well) and its great.. its also great just using, because it sits there and you can push tapes in and out with one hand and dont need to hook up cables all the time. the DSR-11 also records/plays DVcam which brings a whole other batch of advantages.

Re: deck question

Two questions, please:

Can the DSR-11 record directly from the DVX? (Like a tape-based Firestore)?

Would you give a rough idea of how much capture from the DVX is too much? (IE, you should never do it; 4 or 5 tapes/month is OK; etc.)

Having read recent posts, esp from the guy who unfairly blamed Rush for his DVX deck problem, I'm worried about my DVX now!

Re: deck question

As far as I know yes it can as long as you enable the firewire throughput on the DVX in the menu.

I wouldn't say there is a set amount of capturing to do from the DVX. I have never been an authority on the subject, just an observer of natural happenings, but it seemed like most people started to have problems during shuttling. I would say playing back a whole tape without batch digitizing individual clips would stress the heads and motors less than shuttling. Customers even had problems shuttling bigger cameras like JVC GY-DV5000U's, which take full size cassettes. One of my customers said he was using the head cleaner every other day! When he said that, I almost had a heart attack :o... I told him to stop, and send it in to JVC for service and cleaning, perhaps a head change, because head cleaning, even the proper type with swabs and alcohol, is like a preventative vitamin, not a healing balm. I only used my DVX as a deck twice, and twice it gave me errors when I shuttled. I restarted the camera, then simply played back the tape, and it was fine. Then I stopped doing that altogether, and used the ZR20.

Re: deck question

Sure it won't last as long with much wear. Another factor would be how fast your deck can keep up with you. My friend's sharp viewcam can't match my canon optura 10(it's bested pretty much any consumer cam actually i've found, go canon?) in terms of tape transport speed (not just rewind, but shuttling and frame-by-frame movement). It seems the larger the cam i use, the more precise, and speedier the tape deck is. I'd assume pro decks would be built better and faster for this purpose.

Re: deck question

True, I found a world of difference using my DSR11, in accuracy and batch ability. My avid stopped generating errors during batch capture using the DSR11.

Re: deck question

thanx guys
I'll be capturing a couple clips here and there
never a two hour feature.
firestore sounds great I won't eve use the heads at all!!!
but $800 for 40 GB it's a lil' too much
wouldn't it be better DVX> laptop >DV rack?
if I can find someone to carry the laptop arround ...
wouldn't it be funny to see some guys down the street one with a camera and one with a laptop connected with a cable and performing al kinds of stunts just to keep the cable hooked... maybe it would look indie maybe it would look high tech... oh well

who blamed Rush fore wearing their heads?????

Rush is a cool dude

Re: deck question

do you recommand a deck to any dvx user?
I'm gonna shoot 30P for extreme sports and 24P advanced

Re: deck question

I have a Sony DSR-45 and I'm very happy with it. It has component in/out, RS422/232, canon audio connectors, time code, etc, very useful. Most of my jobs in Leitch Velocity were captured in component, nice quality. The deck is fast and strong. I bought it mainly to handle DVCAM tapes.

Re: deck question

I have one of the old, ORIGINAL Opturas. Yes, the one that looks like an SLR. Its still in perfect shape. In fact, I still use it to shoot occasionally for family things, or when I want that really slow shutter look. My DVX is none A... Anyway, is there any reason not to use the Optura as a deck, even though it's one of the first and oldest mini DVs? Will it still have all the functionality? Thanks.
