Decent Voiceover mic?

What's a good voiceover mic for under $300?

I just read a rant on coreyburton.com about the Senn 416T.
Then again, I don't have 1,400 bucks for a mic anyway. I'm trying to buy LIGHTS next...sheesh.

Re: Decent Voiceover mic?

actually i just use the mic on my TRV-70, with a piece of foam to keep the "P" and "t" from poping. I record what i need to say on DV, then throw out he Video trackand cut up the audio.speak right into it in a qiet room. Works fine for me. Aka u can use an decent quality 1chip mic. it might hiss a little but its basically free cause ihave the cam already.

Re: Decent Voiceover mic?

Hey
This is about the popping sounds on the "p" and the "t". I remember in one of my radio classes the teacher taught us to not talk directly into the microphone.. as in dont point the mic right at your mouth. We would have our mouth beside and it would sound a lot better. This was when our mouths were really close to the mics though... the mouth was practically on the mic. I hope this helps with whatever mic you are using. Thanks

Re: Decent Voiceover mic?

Yeah you can do that, or more commonly, you could have it above your mouth, pointing at an angle to it (using a large diaphragm condenser mic, you're pointing the "front side" not the tip).

You can also buy a pop filter for pretty cheap. If you're just too proud of your guerrilla roots to buy anything, not matter how inexpensive, you can make one out of an old wire coat-hanger and a nylon stocking.

Ahhh, the stockings! LOL
Thanks for the input...
I've decided to stop being a pretty boy for now, and to just use my shotgun or my lav and to labor away to make it sound my best.

Re: Decent Voiceover mic?

I usually use a Shure SM81. I got it a few years ago as payment for a quick project and I've found it works really well.
