the gate? there are 2 small jewelers size screws that can be removed. Has anyone here had experience with this? Im contemplating taking it down but scared to venture as you can appreciate.. The gate? What is that?

Hey Fred - I just noticed your post. Yeah, it's been a while since we last visited here. In the meantime, we've garnered a few members who think it is fun to laugh at other's misfortune. ;)

I'm sorry to hear about the bad luck. I suppose sending it in for repair is your only option - regardless of who pays for the repair.

Other than the lens issue, how is the documentary progressing? Do you plan any travels to the Severe Storms Lab in Norman? If so, I might be able to help you record some interviews, etc.

Let me know.

Hey,

I had a similar problem: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=6733

Fortunately for me, I was able to get it reparied under warranty. The tech said it would have cost approximately $400 to dismantle the lens and remove it otherwise. Its a very labor intensive operation, I take it.

I personally wouldn't mess with trying it yourself, as the lens unit costs about $1200 (I think that's what he said) to replace, so you have much more to lose by trying than just getting it done right the first time.

In the meantime, use your ND filters and shoot with the aperature as wide open as you can get, and zoom in a bit. These things will help you minimize the appearance of the spot, assuming it is small enough to begin with.

Good luck.
