debating between two mics, Oktava MK-012 or Audio-Technica AT875R.

I am thinking of getting either the Audio-Technica AT875R or the Oktava MK-012, planning on shooting indoors and outdoors, which one do you guys recommend from experience?

Those are two different types of mics. The Octiva, a hypercardioid, cardioid, omni (depending on the cap used) should be used indoors(Generally speaking), and shotguns are for out doors(generally speaking). I'd suggest the Rode NTG-2 as a bit higher quality shotgun than the 897. You need both types of mics to cover indoor/outdoor shooting. Read the stickies for specific info on choosing the right type of mic for a particular situation.

Hey Chadfish, you commented on the 897 and the OP actually mentioned the AT875R. We have both the Octava and the AT875R and, as you said, they're good for different situations. Both are good mics and have to say the AT875R is an excellent little shotgun that often doesn't get the respect it deserves. I'd also recommend getting both of these instead of an either/or proposition.

from sound samples and videos ive seen the 875r sounded excellnet both indoors and outdoors but i would like more input if possible

I have both, the full MK-012 set and the AT875R. I find the rejection to be better with the AT, but the Oktava is a versatile mic and like it for that. For outdoor shooting the AT might be a better choice. For indoor, controlled environments the Oktava will work quite well and has a nicer sound to me. No one mic will do all jobs, you can buy the AT for about $190 and get the basic MK-012 for mid $200's with choice of capsule or the full set in the mid $300's. I got lucky and picked up the Oktava set in black for $315 from The Sound Room with their Facebook discount. The price is higher now.

For a current project we recorded a live jam session with a band, bluegrass and celtic kind of music. I used the on board stereo mics of my Edirol E-44 and placed the MK-012 with omni in the middle of the 6 different string instruments. All this in the living room of one of the players. I was blown away with how amazing it sounds with that combination and method of mics for recording. It will be the music bed for a beer label marketing piece.

I use the MK-012 with hyper capsule for indoor interviews and have been extremely happy with the quality.

Oops! I mistyped. I meant the 875R. I guess if you had to choose the AT would be better since you can use it indoors, but really, you need more than one mic. I have the Rode NT-3 shotgun and the AT4053b hyper, and I'm pretty happy with the quality/price ratio. Still, I'd upgrade frther if I had the $$$ to spare. As it is I'm happy.

I'm not surprised that you like the Oktava for music recording. I personally bought them for music recording (a stereo set mounted A-B and both mics with omni capsules) and then I found out how great it sounds on voices, which is why I now mostly use it for dialog recording on location. It's not a Schoeps, of course, but it's not as far away from that as the price difference suggests. I recommend it. By the way they have mini preamps now too, nice for hiding the mic somewhere in a shot, similar to Schoeps's Colette system.

+1 to chad regarding the 4053b and NTG-3.

As the prices for Oktavas have climbed, they aren't quite the bargain they once were. For $499 you can get a AT 4053b which is a significant improvement IMO. I have both Oktavas and the ATs, and the Oktavas just sit.
