Death of a smoke trail?

I found a good smoke video and I keyed out the right elements. With some color correction, my first attempt won't look half bad. I'm not sure how they generated the smoke, but the clip is far too long for a silenced pistols shot.

How should my smoke trail end? Do I lower the opacity of the smoke layer over time, or do I play it in reverse speed?

hey sbrvan, are you using AE? for my fog effects, i applied a mask and feathered the edges so the fog appears to trail off at the desired point. the more gradual you want the fade, the more you increase the feathering...hope this helps
 
I'll have to budget some time to spend in After Effects. Were you using an effect out of the box, or was this fog that you created on your own?
