Dealing with video files on a recorded DVD

No longer owning a DV deck and needing to record an event with a second camera, I had the bright idea of using my standalone DVD recorder. Got home and played back the DVD, the footage is all there and looks great! But now I am unable to get the files into a usable format. In fact, when I open up the Video TS folder (which contains over 2 gigs) and open the individual files (about 9 of them), they are all small files and add up to a few hundred megs. The only footage I can view if I open them in QT is the first 10 seconds or so of the two 30 minute clips I recorded. What's going on? How can I view and edit these clips?

The DVD format (MPEG-2) is meant for delivery not acquisition. You'll need to convert the files into a suitable editing format like Quicktime or AVI. Try MPEG streamclip it should get you headed in the right direction.

you can always use a camera as the middle man between the DVD player and your computer. Or something like a Canopus.

Hi,

There are several programs like DVD2AVI or some programs like Ulead VideoStudio that will edit the content as is.

If the content isn't AC3 (Dolby) audio encode, you can change the file names from xxx.vob to xxx.mpg and edit with Vegas.
