Dealing with Lip Smacking

Does anyone have any tips with dealing with the lip smacking sounds.

I don't mean the sounds you hear during a sentence. I mean the sounds you here in between sentences in audio recordings?
Usually due to the person moving their lips a little before they begin a sentence.

I usually just cut the lip smacks out manually as they occur. It's no that big of a deal. But I was wondering if any of the experts here have any tips for removing lip smack sounds from audio recordings.

I have messed around with getting further from the microphone to eliminate those sounds, but the recordings just don't sound as nice when too far away.

Usually, I don't hear much of the lip smacking until I add compression. I use the pre-set setting of 2:1 compression starting at -18db - I love the way the 2:1 compression makes the audio sound, so I don't want to stop using it.

Any suggestions? I use Vegas Pro 13.

Drinking water helps. Most recordists I work with will not hesitate to offer a bottle of water to the talent if they notice it through the cans.

I try to make sure there's a bottle of water for in interviewee to drink, to the point I'll bring some in my kit. And I'll ask people to drink occasionally...and explain why... It really really helps.
