Dealing with companding

I bought the Sennheiser Evolution G2 wireless lav about a month and a half ago, because I'd been using a borrowed wireless lav (I think it was a Samson) on and off for a while, to pretty good effect, and fell totally in love with the convenience.

But today I used my G2 lav in a fairly quiet environment and noticed a new noise that I now know is called (or is a result of) companding.

I am sooooooo sad.

Is there any way to mitigate the ill effects of companding? Are there circumstances under which it either doesn't arise, or is just less noticeable? Is companding something that's happening all the time? I have used my G2 and not noticed these weird sound artifacts -- what could I have been doing differently?

(Thanks.)

Are you sure the artifacts are from companding and not RF interference? Companding is happening all the time, and you can expect it to be less noticeable on narrow bandwidth sources like a human voice than with something like live music. The mic can also be a factor in whether companding is more or less noticeable. Some mics are just better matched to a given wireless set and there is no way you can predict in adavnce if it'll be a good match. So here are a few possibilities that come to mind.

Thanks for responding, Barry. No, I'm not sure what I was hearing was companding, after reading your post. The research I did on the web told me that a "breathing sound" at regular intervals is the result of companding, and that's what I thought I was hearing; but I was recording people speaking -- not music -- so now I'm doubting my own diagnosis. The mic I'm using is the mic that came with the G2, and I read on this forum somewhere that the mic that comes with the wireless set you buy is least likely to give you trouble -- so I think the mic itself is probably a good match for the set.

So maybe it's RF interference I'm hearing, as you say. That would be a great relief, because it seems there might be things I can DO about that (in the future, anyway). I need to read Exile's document now. Thanks, Barry, for your help!

I just might.... :-) The introduction to that document alone is verrrrry interesting... That Bruce Jones guy (the VP) sounds like a good guy... Nothin' like loving what you do... Next time, Lectrosonics! :-)

THERE IS lectro group on yahoo , you can meet him personally there , - just dont say you g-2 user :-)
I wish you will rid off the s.h..... as soon as possible :-)
