DEADLINE! how can I quickly encode 5 hours of footage?

I NEED to overnight a rough cut DVD to a client tonight.

I've got roughly 5 hours of edited SD content broken into 1 hour segments. Toast says it's taking WAY too long to encode.

Right now I'm encoding the quicktime mov's to web size in the background, hoping it will cut down on encoding time, but even that is taking a long time in QT.

Any suggestions of what I can do here? I don't need full quality, just need to get it on a DVD or two so I can send it out for them to look over.

Do you have a capture card of ANY kind? This is a BIG reason I got one, when I was capturing DVCPRO HD via firewire and dealing with P2. I didn't need one before, but I got one when making a DVD of a 90 min rough cut took 12 hours.

A capture card and a DVD recorder. Press play, press record. Real time.

Arrgg... no capture card. Sounds like that would've been a great solution though.

Anything else you could possibly think of, Shane?

THis isn't DV by any chance is it? One thing you can do is export a self contained, or REF QT, reimport, drop that into a DV timeline, render, then output to a DV Device (camera) then to a DVD Recorder. But then you need a DVD recorder.

It is DV. That sounds like it would work! I just got off the phone with the client and told them there's a slight snag, but I'm still attempting to get it out this evening. Didn't sound like they'd be too upset if it took an extra day, so we'll see what happens.

Well... sh!t. It's five hours long, and the last FedEx drop off is 8:30. If I started right now, I wouldn't make it.

F@#k it. It'll encode tonight and I'll ship out tomorrow, even if that means I take a dock in pay.

REALLY appreciated the help, Shane. It doesn't go unnoticed.

When I have gotten into tough spots like this I have told my client:

" Im sending you files on a data DVD. you must watch them on a computer. "

I try not to author DVDs unless the final product IS a DVD.
