De-interlacing VS Flicker Removal

I'm editing interlaced video, and exporting WMV's. I did a little experiment. I took an avi clip and exported it using the De-interlacing field option, then exported the same clip using the Flicker Removal field option. When i visually compare the two exports, they look identical, which brings me to my question...

In general, which is prefered, which is better, which makes more sense; De-interlacing or Flicker Removal? If I do neither, the exported WMV looks like crap, and I can't do both, so I imagine I have to pick one. Any help would be appreciated!

De-interlacing, in my opinion, done by Premiere is absolutely ghastly. I compared manually deinterlaced clips to Premiere's auto deinterlaced and man, the differences are huge.

Flicker removal is mainly to remove the jaggies.

How are you manually deinterlacing the clips vital?

I get the difference between the two, just can't figure out why u can either do one or the other, but not both. Is one prefered over the other in certain situations?

Hi tripleAAA,
It seems to be a common technique but I think all that Premiere does to deinterace is to toss one of the fields in the frame and double up the lines from the other field maybe with some interpolation and/or blur thrown in. So you really wind up loosing half your vertical resolution.

I would have thought that flicker removal would be more of a simple guassian blur but can't say I've actually compared the two side by side. I've used the flicker removal on rolling credits to get them to look better on a standard TV.

This article over on the Cow describes a number of deinterlacing techniques:

The article is getting a little dated and some apps may have improved their technique but I tried the built-in de-interlacers in PPro 1.5 and AE 6.5 and was not happy with either result. I wound up using the RE:Vision Effects FieldsKit plugin for the project I was working on. The plugin actually determines how pixels are moving in the scene and does motion estimates to do the de-interlace. The price is pretty reasonable ($90) for what it does. There's a full featured demo you can download to see if it does what you want.

The full Magic Bullet Suite also has a de-interlacer but you have to buy the full suite to get it. It not in the Editors version that ships with new DVXs. Haven't tried it myself.

Have you checked out AE7? That new timewarp effect does motion estimating for re-timing frames. The timewarp engine can also be used for frame blending. I wonder if that means the deinterlacer has improved as well.

Dan!

Thanks for the advice, I've pulled up FieldsKit. When I upgraded to PPro 2.0, I didn't buy the newest version of AE, I still have the AE that came with the 1.5 video collection package, infact I don't even know if it works with 2.0. Oh boy. Either way, if I get all of this figured out, i'll let you know how it goes.
