De-Interlace question here

Is it just me or does De-Interlacing in FCP effect the quality of the image?

When I add De-Interlace it makes the image look blotchy and when I play with the field it makes the image look a bit out of focus.....

What's the proper way to use this?

Thanks guys

Deinterlacing will merge fields or split fields. (Haven't tried FCP's version) In either case you're going to be losing some resolution.
What are you trying to do?

Well, it was just a test as I noticed some ugly lines in some 24p footage that I shot and wanted to figure out how to clean that up.

I added the De-interlae to it in FCP and it just made it look really bad but playing with the field cleaned it up just a little bit. Funny thing is that when I paused it, after already playing with the field, it looked amazing but when I unpaused it the footage went back to crap.

I think you're just seeing a combo of poor FCP de-interlacing and poor FCP playback on screen of rendered sections. Play back out to the TV monitor and it should look fine, but onscreen it can look icky. BTW, check out the higher quality de-interlacers in Film Effects at www.nattress.com if you've not aleady done so.

You shouldn't see lines in 24p footage IF pulldown has been removed and it's in a 23.98 timeline.
If this is the case go to your playback prefs and make sure it's set to playback at highest quality. Make sure your canvas window is 100% size so it's not doing any resizing.

IF pulldown wasn't removed and it's in a 29.97 timeline then interlace lines are normal and needed if you're playing out to standard video.

Just to throw something out that can happen when you screw up badly... When I first got my DVX I immediately had to shoot 24PA on scene 6 (of course) so I took it to a party and shot a bunch of friends being goofy. I came home and loaded the imported everything and noticed that despite capturing with advanced pulldown, the clips were still 29.97. So being rather clever I just selected "remove advance pulldown" manually. This seemed to work fine, but after editing everything and making a DVD I noticed that there were wierd random interlace lines here and there. I went back and checked everything out, and I finally realized that my scene 6 (I bought a used camera) was not set to 24PA, but 24N. So FCP is more than happy to apply advance pulldown to a clip that was not shot in 24PA if you force it :)
