De-interlace or not

I shot some footage with a DVX 100, edited it in FCP 4, and used Compressor and DVD Pro to make a DVD. The DVD didn't look very good when viewed on a computer , so I went back and de-interlaced in FCP and then made it into a DVD. It looked better when viewed on a computer but the image was softened quite a lot. Is there better deinterlace programs other than the one in FCP or do they all do about the same. Are there advantages to deinterlacing video before making a DVD, will it look better on LCD and Plasma progressive scan TV?

That is such a complicated thing to answer. Personally, I like to de-interlace only when footage looks jumpy. Otherwise I won't mess with it, because you are throwing away information. Test the different de-interlace settings to see what looks best on both your computer monitor and your playback monitor. Compression is a black art with nearly unlimited tweaks that can be done. I just got back from MacWorld and was talking with a QuickTime guy who spends a great deal of his time simply testing to find optimal compression settings so images will look good. And he's a QUICKTIME GUY!! A lot of it is trial and error. Your best bet would be to take a small chunk of your busiest footage... like 5 or 10 seconds of it... and use that to test different settings until you come up with a look you're going to be happy with.

Yes I noticed that when I de-interlaced all my footage, they still looked interlaced (even when I set it on max) no matter wheather or not I even applied it.
