DD 5.1 compatible Stereo?

Let's say the only audio track I'm able to fit onto a DVD is a 5.1 AC3 file....Will a DVD player that can only play stereo or mono be able to adapt and play back the 5.1 AC3 file with no problems?

Never heard of a DVD player that could not play 5.1? If you have a player that ONLY has stereo outputs then just make sure your primary audio is mixed into the front Left/Right channels of your 5.1 mix and it should play fine.

I should've worded it better. What I meant was the whole system itsself. The only speakers available are on the TV. Say a sound is assigned to the back left or right speaker. Will this sound play on stereo and mono also?

hum....not sure. I don't ever remember watching a DVD and listening to it through my TV speakers. I doubt it though. Try playing a regular commercial DVD and see what happens to the surround sound channels.

i don't have surround at home and i often watch movies set to the 5.1 setup. it's never been a problem for me. the main thing is to test your 5.1 mixes on non surround systems. and don't put some essential dialog entirely on a surround channel (obviously.)
