i just got one today and i was wondering if you guys tried hookin up your battery charger in it...

in the owners manual of the inverter, it sates some chargers gets destroyed, but most of them are ok

any of you experinece this?

and also can i run AC with the DVX with the inverter? without destroying my camera...

i got an inverter that can handle up to 350watts FYI

We used an inverter on our trek to Belize - roughly 4000 miles of charging and each one of our batteries and charger seem to b

damn i didnt even kno they had a car charger... but i think the inverter is gonna be cool because i can hook up lights to it and a monitor... im gonna be shooting a car scene at nite, that is another reason why i got this.

so overlandfilm its coo then right?

I have a 1200 watt continous 3000 watt surge inverter in my car. I have used it when shooting in middle of a field or where no electriciy was available. Works just fine especially because there is no noise like a gas powered generator. I also use small 100watt surge 75 watt continous in my 12volt light batteries for a variety of purposes including running the DVX with the charger. For some reason, the rule of thumb says that the power supplies where the plug is right on the transformer shouldn't be used with an inverter but the power supplies that have a cord that attaches to the outlet are ok. I've never been sure why.
You must be aware, however, that you can only get 350 watts if it's hooked directly to the battery terminals. If you use a cigerette lighter plug, it has a 15 or 20amp fuse on it. The max you can safely use is 150 to 200 watts continous. If your device surges above that it will blow the fuse.

Don't you have to keep your car running? If the battery is drained your stranded. I have 400 watt DC to AC connverter which I plan to use to run a video monitor. I was wondering if I could use a battey belt with a cig light plug. And how long would a 50watt monitor run from a 10 pound battery belt?

if your running off your cigarette lighter it will use the alternators power, so the car can be turned off...

tahnks gary.

i still dont get this part hehe

Yes you most certaintly must have the car running. I keep it around 1000 to 1200 rpm. I use a very fancy stick on the gas pedal to raise the rpm over idle. By the way, the amount of amperage that a 1000 watt inverter uses is approximately 100 amps. My inverter is wired to the battery with 4 gauge wire (equivalent to a heavy duty jumper cable) with a 200 amp circuit breaker at the battery.
As far as what makes the difference in the power supplies, I read it in my 400 watt inverters manual and could never understand the difference. Maybe an electronics expert could shed some light.

I took my old battery from an old car and used the inverter out in the middle of nowhere. It works but there are risk involved. I shouldn't have plugged that 1k into it..!!

As far as batteries are concerned, they are made for different purposes, even though they all are 12 volt. A car battery has incredible cranking power to start your car but if you leave the headlingts on it will go dead very shortly. In contrast a deep cycle battery (like the ones for fishing trolling motors and emergency lighting) will run the same headlignts for hours but won't start your car very well.
A simple method to get a handle on battery usage is to divide by 12 (volts). If you have a 100 watt dc light and divide by 12 it has an amperage rating of 8.33 amps. If you use a deep cycle battery that is rated 4 amp hours your 100 watt light should run for about 1/2 hour.
So, if you have a 50watt monitor plugged into an inverter (with the 4amp/hr battery) you could expect it to run for about an hour.
Most inverters have a low voltage shutdown that will turn off long before your car battery won't have enough energy to start your car. I still wouldn't use it without having your car running though.
