so I was using the andrew kramer technique of day for night and I even have a few high quality plugins that do the trick BUT I havent seen a technique where you do the day for night with people and be able to keep there tones and colors because everything always ends up looking blue..??

I have some night shots that I want to mix in with some days , although I want the day shots to become night shots now. I also want to burn a building behind the talent and even the flames end up blue tinted with the day to night which just doesnt look right so my question is ....

do yall know how to change that? make a day for night but be able to sperate colors, ie: make some colors still look colorful, not all blue tinted? also I dont want blue flames either..lol
help ya boy out!!

all help is appreciated in advance

You can use masks around objects/people/fire and then adjust them individually. Also for your fire, you'l have to tint other objectsred/orange + flicker where the firelight should touch.

so by mask's you mean I would really have to rotoscope the person, because this is video..ughh.. I didnt really wanna roto.. guess i have to..(BUT WAIT, if I roto, it would still look out of place as everything around him would have a blue tint yet he would remain too colorful..??hmmm I guess I would still have to color correct him to a somewhat tinted blue.)

and when you say 'tint' the areas around me , actually the building looks and an old church and it was already burned up so i figured it would be perfect to burn since it has charred windows and what not, so how exactly can I make the glow around it to illuminate?? I remember a tutorial that did that I just remember the technique!??

I gotta start logging these techniques.. I forget too much (all them blunts in my younger days..lol)

thanks for the tips, keep em coming..

yeah thats what I'm talking about triplej96 . any tips on when I roto the person how to make the skins tones blend in with the blueish look of day for night filter? curves, levels, hue/saturation, all of the above..lol also the fire will be the same thing as far as matching the blueish cast of the day to night look while still burning hot/reds/oranges and the smoke that will accompany it .

got alot of work to do..

It totally depends on your footage, but don't overlook color-based or luminance-based matting/masking. If you don't have any other skin-toned elements in-frame or the skin is the brightest thing in the image, you can mask it out without rotoscoping. But this totally depends on the actual image content in your footage. You'll still need to color correct skin, flame, what have you, but just less than the majority of the footage. This should be easier with your fire, possibly, than with skin.

Precomp your footage and apply color adjustments to drive everything you want colorized to black and what you want to preserve to white (easier if you're trying to isolate skin and fire) and then bring in that precomp as a luma inverted track matte for your color corrections (best done as an adjustment layer).

Bah, I hate roto jobs.

I wonder if there ever any one will come up with a half decent automatic roto mask.

appreciate the input fellas.. yeah when I did a double take on kramers day to night tute I saw he did one (with a picture, no video) but he did do luma masking , I tried it but my skin tone wasnt bright enough and it wasnt giving me what I wanted .. I think I may have to do roto.. good thing is on one shot, he hardly moves BUt the other shot he's walking slo mo shot to the right of the building I want to burn so that one will be harder.ugh.. yeah I feel you postmaster.. anyone ever try silhouettefx roto, I've heard good things and was going to download a copy and try it out..

I'll try and post my updates so you guys can maybe give me the yay or nay..lol

thanks again..

Yeah I hear ya Frank but I actually enjoy roto work, carzy I know :).

I use mocha AE personally but if I had the money I would get Silhouettefx for sure. I used it before briefly it's wonderful for paint and roto!

A while ago, I saw an article on using the motion estimates in, I think it was, the compression algorithm for Mpeg-2. The idea is that at some intermediate point the Mpeg-2 'estimates' what has moved, and just tracks that motion.

I've never had the time to follow up, or even go out and hunt for enough source code to do any form of implementation.

There is an open source motion tracking project, which one of these days I'll get on my linux box, or even... parish the though, buy the Mac OS X version... to do some tracking projects using Blender.
