Day for Night (DFN)

Hello all,

I have a script that takes place at night. Aprox 90% of the film is interior, which helps. I was hoping to shoot the exterior footage using a Day for Night (DFN) filters. I have read a few articles on the subject, but many were on film, no DV. Some of the articles have conflicted with one another. Could anyone take the time to provide some advice?

Thank you,
AE

The best advice I can give is to learn how to light day for night. Lighting is crucial for giving a convincing night effect. You can add any filter you want, optical or post, but if your lighting is wrong, it will not be convincing. Do a search on lighting for day for night, you'll come up with alot of great tips.

Have you experienced any problems with doing NFD in post that I may want to keep in mind? Is there anything I should keep in mind/do in pre-production/preduction to assist with the results I want in post (DFN using After Effects)? Thank you OneInfiniteLoop!

Thank you Scharky, I'll do some research on lighting day for night. In your opinion do you think this route (DFN) is more difficult and time consuming than shooting at night with proper lighting?

I have a feeling that a lot of the upcoming Sci-fi movies will have a lot of DFN shots. I know I have 3 for sure. (Wether or not they are convincing is another story)
