Davinci Resolve node linking

I've searched several places and can't find an answer to this. In the accompanying screenshot, why does the existence of the unlinked node (03) affect the node path output? It's not even in the linked node path! You can see that the gamma is pushed way into blue on Node 02, yet it's not reflected in the output. If I delete Node 03, suddenly the blue gamma push shows, so I know that Node 03 is affecting the output just by simply existing, even though it's not attached to anything.

In general I want to understand how to change how nodes are linked/unlinked/relinked, but my immediate reason is that I'd like to quickly bypass nodes without having to select every node I want to bypass and hit CTRL+D for each one. As an example to help clarify, if I'm using 8 serial nodes, if I want to see only what nodes 1-4 are doing, I'd like to remove nodes 5-8 from the node path and send the output of the node 1-4 sequence to the output. But it looks like I can't since even having any "floating", unattached nodes affects the final output.

Is this 'just the way it is', or am I missing something on how node linking works? If a node isn't linked up to anything, shouldn't it be ignored?
