DaVinci Resolve 14 is out!

Since FCP 7 has been put to death, and I don't like FCP X, I decided to try Resolve 14 on a new project. The transition to this program was far more seamless than going to X. The interfaces are very similar, being a traditional track based editor. A lot of the keyboard shortcuts are the same (and you can remap the ones that aren't). The color correction tools are obviously light years better and the title tool has more functionality (although it's still kind of basic). Haven't messed around too much on the audio but it also looks vastly better. Overall I think the program is snappier than FCP 7 performance wise, which is to be expected, and haven't encountered major glitches. There are minor interface things I just had to adjust to, and I prefer the visual scrubbing on FCP 7 better, but I'd say anyone who was clinging to FCP 7 and wants to move on, but can't bear FCP X, to give DaVinci a spin. The free lite version has like 85 percent of the functionality as the pro version. In fact, I think all the pro features have to do with advanced color correction tools. As an editor it's fully featured.

There are some other limitations on the free one regarding what resolutions you can work with or maybe export. Like to hear other opinions as I will probably have to make the same decision soon.

Right, the free maxes out at UHD, 3840x2160. I can still edit with 4k 4096 files, just can't export in that format. And 4k H.264 performance is bad, although supposedly great in the pro version, so you'll have to transcode. You can render optimized media within Davinci to edit with, kind of like FCPX's proxy mode, but it uses its own proprietary format when you do that which you can't use in any other program. Most of my projects are already in 1080p prores format, which the program handles great.
