David O. Russell in: The World's Greatest On Set Rant

I went to a preview screening of Huckabees with a Q&A with Russell. It was the most bizarre Q&A I've attended, because rather than taking quesitons from the audience, Russell wanted to have a debate of Buddhist philosophy and asked that each of us choose between Hoffman and Huppert's characters and their world views. About 3 people in the audience actually engaged him in his little game while the rest of us sat there and wondered, "Why couldn't it be a balance between those two extremes?" Weird guy. And for such a big buddhist he needs to learn a little zen.

These people aren't NORMAL. That's why they're INTERESTING. Freaks and weirdos and eccentrics tend to make the most captivating movies, paint the most beautiful paintings and write the best novels. If you want to check out the work of a bunch of boring, polite, ordinary people, check out 99.999% of the stuff on YouTube. Or Ron Howard's oeuvre.

I'm not going to say that this is a philosophy that I live my life by, but you put into words something I agree strongly with. Good points, all of them.

Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends...
