David Fincher's Zodiac

Just saw an advance screening of this. I'm a big fan of David Fincher and this movie was a definite departure from his visual style. It was shot in HD with the Thomson Viper, which looked absolutely beautiful. It was an amazingly well-structured story considering it was based entirely on case materials. It's about two and a half hours long and I didn't think the story picked up enough until the last half hour or so, but it was worth it in the end. I was disappointed to see such a "normal" movie come from Fincher, but I recognize and appreciate that the subject matter wouldn't have been appropriate for the grittiness and chaos that he usually injects into his storytelling. The acting was all very good, especially Robert Downey Jr., and the scenes were realistic enough to make me feel like I was watching a documentary re-enactment of actual events, but dramatic enough to keep me interested and entertained.

Not quite on the same level as Fight Club or Se7en (his two best films, in my opinion), but for what he had to work with, I think he did a superb job, and I continue to look forward to his future work. I think that rabid fans of Fincher's style will be disappointed, but anyone who appreciates an interesting and engaging story that is well-told won't be.

well he did reshoots and took out his defining stylization he wanted to create a story and wanted to show off a more realism than his other work. I think its great he wants to not to be over flashy, I guess hes afraid it might get old. from the reviews out there they say this is his most mature piece of work to date so im interested i been waiting 2 years for this so i cant wait.

And I respect that plenty. As I said, I recognize that his usual style wouldn't have been appropriate for this story. I think he was wise to show restraint.

yeah i guess he went back to the se7en roots. but with benjamin buttons man hes gonna do straight crazy stuff from what i hear.

I've seen bits and pieces of the film on the movie channel i just bought recently, in lovely 720p mmm yeah

I find it puzzling that I have been able to watch it on TV in HD before it even hits theaters (I first saw about half of it 3 weeks ago on STARZ I believe...)

I obviously wasn't that captivated by it, which is dissapointing because I love Fincher - however I will be seeing it in theaters regardless, so I'll be able to sit down and watch it all..

http://imdb.com/title/tt0371739/ this version was playing starts this month.... it sucks bad... my boss thought it was the same movie too lol

I was having an ongoing conversation about this with one of my friends, and then, in the middle of the conversation, he says, "WAIT! It was released in 2005?!"

I had to laugh. People are thinking that this is the same movie, and it basically is, put Robert Downey Jr, and Gyllenhaall in that movie.
