David Chappelle's Block Party

i liked Chapelle's Show. I thought SOME of the stuff was funny but all in all I just don't like Dave Chapelle. but that's just me

I heard the movie flat out sucked from quite a few people I talked to.
Too much singing but when Dave Chappelle got up on stage and started doing jokes it was hillarious.

I think you've gotta be into the music to see it -- the Reuniting of the Fugees, I happen to think, is Amazing.

Then I think they are missing the point.

I'm not a Fuggees fan or a Jill Scott fan.

I loved this movie. It's my favorite concert film now.

I got this awesome happy feeling and walked out of the theater feeling like a million bucks.

Dave Chappelle is just a naturally funny and fun guy and it shows in that he threw this whole event for thousands of people out of his own pocket. His motivation for doing so was because of his passion and personal beliefs.

At least that's what i took out of the flick.

Also i was very impressed with Michel Gondry's coverage of the concert and the way this film was edited altogether.

I agree. Well except for the Fugees and Jill Scott thing. :)

This is one of the few movies in while where I've walked out of the theater with a general feeling of happiness and well-being. This is a very positive film. And its good to see hip-hop artists portrayed as musicians instead of just entertainers

There is an interesting article in this month's Wired with an interview with Gondry about the movie. He has some very interesting viewpoints on how he tackled a project like this.

WHen I read that he wanted the Roots to be the band on stage the whole time doing all the music, I got really excited. The Roots are a very talented bunch of musicians, along with Mos Def, Fugees, and the Dead Prez, I'm sure it makes for a good movie. I'll have to go see it soon.

wow.
finally saw it and i am blown away.

such a good thing to happen all around.

i don't know anything about hip-hop, but i hope this is a huge step.

And Gondry did a great job doin' his thing. I thought I caught something like a DVX there on the basketball court??? Anyone know what kinda DV camera that was? (the one they caught him making the big shot on??

(lauryn hill made me cry like a *****.)

I just don't get the whole Chappelle thing. I've seen his show a couple of times and thought it was uneven...some funny stuff, some not so funny stuff. He just doesn't do a lot for me.

That was a DVX. I had a geek moment when I caught that too.

SMALL SPOILER ALERT:

Well in the film Dave mentions to the film crew that while they were loading their magazine they missed him make that full court shot. But then the next shot is showing him make it, so I'm assuming that one was from the DVX.

excellent

excellent

yah it was the DVX. This film was shot around September 2004.

the focus problems on the Super 16mm was a problem for me. very distracting. also, they did a lot of (intentional) blurring of people (ala COPS) behind the interview subjects, which was ridiculous and even more distracting. why the heck the lawyers make them do this I don't know. they were on a public street.

it is a fitting tribute to Wattstax, but I don't know if it quite tops it. I found some slow spots and tempo problems. this is much more modern and funny, however.

Dave is fantastic, and I think his heart was really in the project and the Ohio scenes give the concert a sense of purpose beyond just music. dave spent his own money to get this made. the budget was $3m and it's already done $6m in its opening weekend.

when you're hot, you're hot.
