Database For Documentrary Films?

[BigDawg]

I've been researching potential documentary film projects and I've been surprised to discover that so far, I've not yet come across a comprehensive database of documentary films. Does anyone know of a good database for docos?

Realistically, I don't know if such a singular list exists.

You should check IMDB, but I doubt that you will ever find one.

First, define documentary.

A film about cell division? A film about creation?

A film about soup kitchens? A TV cooking show?

A film about endangered wild life? This weeks TV show of the Wesminster Dog Show?

Coverage of the last royal wedding? Your cousin's wedding video?

Leni Riefenstahl's Olmpia? This weeks Olympic coverage?

A film by the Maysles brothers or the Burns brothers? A film by a college student made with her phone?

There are many TV shows about history, wildlife, cars, tourist destinations, local food, etc, that may qualify as documentaries to some people but not to others. Many reality TV shows could qualify as documentaries if you ignore the fact that the situation itself (a bunch of strangers living together in a house or voting each other off of an island) has been staged.

What, exactly, are you looking for?
