DAT tape capture with Premiere?

Is there a way to capture DAT sound files into Premier 3.0 or do I have to capture it in Soundbooth. A friend ask me to edit his student film project but I never synched stuff from DAt tapes before. I am trying to get some info before I agree what I am getting myself into? Thank!

You will need to "capture" your audio through an analogue /digital device such as a camera because Premiere will not recognise and control a DAT machine.

It wont really be a capture - its a line recording.

More than one way of doing this.

1- Depends on your camera but..Connect the DAT to the analogue input on the camera and get a F/W out put to the computer.

2. Connect the DAT analogue output to the soundcard ianalogue input on the Computer directly

I would probably use a good audio i/o interface like an M-Audio or Presonus.. Look under the studio gear section at Musicians Friend. They've got good prices and great service. I bought a lot of gear from them when I was DJing..

Anyway, you went to all the trouble of recording audio to DAT, you might as well spend the money to be able to get the best quality audio into your edit machine -- Unless you're just looking for reference audio for the edit and will do your audio mix later (which is a much better idea)

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to see if my m-audio preamp has any connections. Actually I didn't record on DAT my friend recorded his student 16mm film project on it, but I am trying to see if I can synch and edit it for him. However, I will try the above mention.
