Check out this resource for independent NPR radio producers. It seems reasonably current. The site is full of great audio production advice and and tips/guidelines for interviewing technique.
Don't waste your money on a portable dat recorder. No manufacturer is making them new anymore. They've all been discontinued, and people like Fostex aren't even servicing their DAT machines. If you are looking for a non-timecode device that is solid state, then I would go with the Marantz PMD-670. If you need timecode, then you should check out the Sound Devices 744t, which won't be out until the end of the year.
Anything that writes broadcast wave files should work with final cut pro. FCP does some funky stuff with timecode. I know with files burned from a Deva, FCP removes the timestamps from the metadata, and there is a program out there (I don't know the name), that puts it back. What I don't know is if the same thing will happen with files made from a Sound Devices 744t. The 744t is the machine I would go with.
