Re: Dat Deck with Timecode

very hard qwestion
depends on your progect and what other acsesories do you have at home
if you looking to buy since you are going to shoot at least 2 months  and you really need it now you have only 3 mashins on the market
the hhb -no longer made , the pd-2 no longer made , the pd-4 still avalible new but i dont how much long they are going to produce it (i think that they stop already and only selling what in stock). if you are renting for 2 months i ll gues that it would be around 1600-2000$ for dat +( here in israel about 1200-1500)

the pd-2 is around 1600-2000$ depends on its shape ,the hhb-around 2500-3500
the pd-4 3500-40000 in good shape
now i guess that the price will go down by 25-30% 2 months from now ,with the 744 relies

the machine you are buying today would drop almost the what are you going to put  in the  rent house
so why tobuy ?
if you insist  , i prefer the hhb since never had any problem (tfoo, tfoo, tfoo)
but then you need a mixer since it almost imposible to work as stand alone
if you can waight for non linear -do it ,, if you can do it with out the tc  you can go with fr-2 or even nomad
what about soundman -doesnt he have one ?

Re: Dat Deck with Timecode

we budgeted $3500 for the deck, and are looking at the sound devices 7. Its for a feature, so the rental is moot.

Re: Dat Deck with Timecode

Buying a DAT machine is a colossal waste of money right now. You can't get one new, so you will have to find one used. Your two main choices for your price range would be the HHB Portadat or the Fostex PD-4. You should know that neither company is supporting those products any more, so getting service on them is not going to happen. Your best bet is to rent a dat machine, or Deva II, or buy a used Deva II. The Sound Devices machines are not out yet, but should start to ship within the next few weeks. If you want one of those, start calling dealers now because my guess is, if the dealers have ordered some for stock, they might be already spoken for.

Re: Dat Deck with Timecode

If I werew you I'd jsut go with a regular Alesis ADAT. I know they are intended for studio use but i have used mine for field recording and it works great. all you need is a steady powersupply. I bought a whole rack setup for under 600.00 An alesis ADAT blackface model, A berhinger mixer with optical out, a power supply, and a rack case. All under 600.00 bucks and thats superb quality audio youll get. Recording 8 tracks simutaneously is great.

Re: Dat Deck with Timecode

thats nice until you have to put it on the shoulder , good only for cart use in ac invaerment -the better solution is power book - itt mobile until the rain or high humidity ruin it , the adat is a good solutin but mostly for big sets and studio use - not for indy shoot and go
