Danceshow project

Last weekend I did a video recording of 3 dance shows with 5 camera's, one was connected with 2 XLR cables to the sound system the other four have sound from the stage and surroundings. I just finished the first show, but now I am stuck at the following. I used the XLR audio channels for the music during the dance but after every dance I placed the applauding sound from the other camera's. Is this the correct way of handling this or should I add two extra audio tracks and start mixing the sound when the crowd reacts during or at the end of a dance. At the end of a song the XLR audio channels are quiet.
This is my first time working in post with XLR, I can use al the tips and tricks you can offer.
Thank you!

Not sure what you are seeking from us? Do whatever yields the mix that you want. Neither way is "right" or "wrong". I have done it both ways.

If you want a rule of thumb, place separate kinds of sources on different tracks to allow you proper control over them. Presumably that would mean that you have one track for the direct music recording, and at least one additional track for the ambient (audience reaction, applause, environmental sounds, etc.)

Of course if you were shooting tap or clog or line or some other kind of "percussive" dance style, you would have stage microphone(s) to pick up the sound effects. And a separate track for them, also.

The output will be stereo on DVD, I am using final cut to edit so I can leave the XLR recordings on track 1 & 2 and add the other camera's audio on 3 & 4 and mix them?

A sample of the ending https://vimeo.com/42677547

Yes. Your sample was OK, but I would not cut off the audience/ambient mic completely between applause. It sounds too un-natural to me. I would leave a bit of the audience/ambience microphone "leaked" into the mix to more closely reproduce what you would hear from the audience.

Yes you can add more tracks and that is the way I would do it so you can ease in the audience at the end, it will sound more natural than a hard cut.

BTW XLR is a connector. I know it makes sense to you to use that to differentiate the various recordings on this project but it's probably a bad habit to get into because nobody else will know what cable you used and there is no sonic distinction. It's a little like calling one bunch of footage the green camera shots and the other the black camera shots. It would be clearer to refer to the board feed tracks and the audience mic tracks, or something else that actually relates to the material on the tracks.

Thank you, I just finished the first show after 5 hours of editing and it is working out.
