Dance recital rates

A friend has her daughter in a dance school a had asked me if I would like to shoot the video for there dance recital, my 1st paying gig. I was asked If I wanted to charge a flat rate or just take what I get from dvd sale, so I took dvd sales. I did a two camera shoot with my dvx and dvc30, dvx focused full stage and the dvc for close up and b-roll. They were very happy with it and want me back for the winter recital but the owner of the dance school wants a $5 cut on each dvd. So what I would like to know is what are you guys charging for something Like this.

thanks
chris

I would go with the flat rate, but then read on and saw the 5$ cut and thought... again I would go on the flat rate as you never know how much it will cost and how much it will sell.

Again it depends how much they can give. If you edit too, 500 to 1000.

I just did one exactly like you did with one camera a long shot and then one camera working the stage, but I flat rated it and let the studio make all they could make since they had all the contact with the parents. I started with a $1200 bid, but when the shoot was done they had done twice as many routines as was previously told to me so they added $400 to the price. The price was then of course $1600 and I supplied them with 100 dvds in white sleeves. (since I can burn multiple dvds this was just a bonus for them and didn't cost me much to deliver. I feel it was a win win.) I just choose not to get involved trying to sell to all the parents. This was my first one as well. Your mileage may vary!

Man you guys reply fast. Im not dealing direct with the parents all orders are put in with my friend she hold the checks until I produce the dvds. They were burnt by the guy that shot the last recital, everyone pre-paid and he didnt produce the dvds, they didnt lose there money but it seemed like a pain. I know just going with dvd sales was a gamble but I wanted to get my feet wet and wasnt sure what a fair flat rate would be. Bird I really like the way you did it and I may just go that direction, it seems fair for both parties.

Thanks for the replys.

Yea and a lot less hassle for me anyway, but I'm sure not everyone would go for that. As I said everyone's mileage will vary. Just got my HVX and can't wait to do the next one. That first one was done with a sony 840 and 510. OK cameras but don't hold a candle to this new baby! I really mostly do music videos to my own music. I do bluegrassy gospel and mostly just do subtle transitions as this music doesn't really fit the ras-ma-tas of the mtv genre. Can't wait to do my next music video with the HVX!

God Bless and good luck on your projects,
Bird

Thanks Bird
Your in a good area for bluegrass, my brother lived in Woodstock, went out there in 2004 for Bonnaroo. Love that part of the country, 1st time seeing fireflys.
